Why do Somalis consider other Somalis that do things little different than our somali social cultural norms as "crazy"? Why is indivituality denied in our culture when Allah made us different to begin with.
Don't get it twisted walaal, it is not unique to Somalis. All insular ethnic groups that are culturally homogenous and conservative generally expect you to adhere certain social norms.
Even liberal ethnic groups like some Scandinavians have societal expectations which pressure people to conform to the dominant cultural customs.
You are also forgetting that we are relative newcomers to the West and are still going through the process of assimilation. Change, not necessarily good, is already happening. Give it another few decades and Somali social taboos will cease to exist among the assimilated majority.
We’re a collectivist people. In times of need and suffering it is useful and very touching how we come together to help each other. But I also think individualism serves a purpose - and imposed cultural norms can stifle that. I do think Allah swt created each person with a gift and they should use it for the betterment of themselves and society.
