Somalis in Italy

Are there any Somalis living in Italy? When we talk about Somali diaspora, we often speak about Canada, UK, Scandinavia and the US.

But what about the Somalis in Italy? Are they numerous, what kind of life are they living?

One would think that there would be a lot of Somalis living there just like in the UK because Italy was a colonizer of a part of modern day Somalia.

Anything interesting and unique about this branch of the Somali diaspora?

One of my aunts lives in Italy, her and her Italian husband fled there after the war broke out. I don’t know much about the Somali diaspora in Italy though.

Interesting. How did your family react to your aunt marrying an Italian?

I have been in Italy a couple of times but I didn't meet any Somalis. Lot of Africans there though.

Surprisingly, marriages between Somalis and Italians was common back in the day. My grandpa told me that the Italians were very open and friendly people who fully immersed themselves into the Somali culture, unlike the British who preferred to be segregated and acted all holier-than-thou. Somalis and Italians got along well.

Not in Somalia. My grandparents said everyone hated the Brits because they were the racist ones but liked the Italians. Many Somali singers and cultural stars were half Italian themselves.

Fun fact: Somalis were pro-fascist Italy and one of our sultans even visited a Nazi rally as a guest of honour.

Yes theres many nowadays stuck there on tahriib. But Italy is a very racist country so I doubt any want to live there

looool when I read the title of this thread I immediately thought of this video.

I find it so odd though. Seeing these Somalis casually having a laugh with their former colonizers.

Most of the marriages have been between Italian men and Somali women. My cousins have all been raised Roman Catholic in Italy, but if the war didn’t break out they might’ve been raised Muslim due to society.
