Northern is not just a location but a cultural & dialect thing in Somalia. People from Somaliland region are known as reer waqooyi, while those from Puntland are reer bari/reer mudug (applies for Galmudug as well). Rest are southerners.

I heard the reason Reer Waqooyi are called northerners is because of Somali Galbeed calling them so since SL is located on their north.

Puntites can't call yall northerners since SL is on our west, we should call you guys westerners instead.

Geographical, we are at the most northern point in the somali peninsula but when you say waqooyi, Somalis will automatically assume the hillbiily qaldans. Hence we are reer Bari
