Somaliland faces an explosion of mental health conditions

Main points of the article:
1/3 Somalis have mental conditions, this is a higher rate than other countries facing war and poverty.
The entire somaliland region only has two psychiatrists
Mental illness thought to be fuelled by war and khaat.

There should be more widespread concerns about mental health in the Somali community. The fact that this is still a taboo subject undermines any effort to rebuild Somalia. I am really surprised that the Somalis in the diaspora are not doing more to help. E.g establishing charities to fund care facilities in Somalia, Diaspora Somalis training in this area to carry out research and go back to Somalia to help with this crisis.

pls im broke send moneys
The go-to diagnosis for somalis when it concerns mental health is that the person is possesed
They cant label every case as 'the jin is responsible'. They should open up to other treatments and at least improve quality of life for that person

Couple that with the highest rates of khat consumption in all of Somalia and you've got serious problems in the near future, pretty sure the same results would be seen throughout somalia.

diaspora somali trained doctors have a good opportunity here. especially people interested in the fields of neurology, and psycology.i don't think they would want to stay and work though in somalia. because they would be getting paid a lot more in their countries compared to working in somalia. There probably is some diaspora led health organizations that we don't know about that is fighting this problem though.
