Somalia was destined to fail even before independence

Because we're one of the most resource poor countries in the world. Certainly in Sub Saharan Africa. We simply lacked the natural resources needed to run a modern state.

Other than an ocean, which is all desert north of Mogadishu, and two medium sized rivers that are dammed by Ethiopia, Somalia doesn't have anything. Now combine that with one of the highest birth rates in the world. Somalia is just a disaster waiting to happen. The international community will eventually get tired of raising money for famine year after year.

Now compare us to South Sudan.

-Their entire country is arable.
-Rich in water resources.
-Large amounts of proven oil reserves.
-Small population.

Ugh, Japan has zero natural resources so clearly the notion that natural resources are essential to a successful country is a false one.

Somalia's problems:

-No significant history of state or empire before colonialism
-Clanism
-A political elite interested primarily in looting
-Backwards cultural habits (e.g. polygamy which leads to high birth rates)

How does this help support your claim?
If anything, it disproves it by showing that a country can fail even with great natural resources.
You get an F-.

He's saying South Sudan has a lot of upward mobility due to those advantages, in other words they have the potential to change and become rich in the future, Somalia's lack of natrual resources + high birth rates and backward cultural pracitises = destined to fail and less potential to change things in the future.

So no its you who get an F.

So you agree with him that natural resources are what make or break a country?

You can also take an F-.

Somalis did have states and empires before colonialism, but our pre-modern history doesn't have much relevance here.

Somalis, being a nomadic people, have developed cultural traits that are very antithetical to the hierarchy needed to have a state. That includes clannism. But you also have other nomadic people such as the Kazakhs who have developed their country into an upper-middle class income status. Now, what's the difference between Somalia and Kazakhstan? The latter derives 70 % of it's economy from natural resources.

Somalia is one of the most resourceful countries in the world, f*ck you talking about? Somalia has no deserts but dry arid soil which can easily be fixed by modern-day irrigation and we have plenty arable land but the problem is it's not cultivated because of lack of money and stability. We have proven to have large reserves of water but the problem is we cannot block and save the seasonal rivers and rain water since it eventually ends up in the ocean but we have proven large water reserves underground and in the mountains. If Somalia were rich, we'd save up so much water and start giving waters to our neighbors. Ethiopia cannot block our rivers or the international community would sanction them and it's illegal to do that but what we can do is expand our river by using the Indian rejuvenated method and even make Nugaal river permanent from Sheikh mountain to Eyl which could end Somaliland and Puntland dispute.

I laughed so much when you said we would give water to our neighbours.

WE WOULD GIVE WATER TO ETHIOPIA????

Egypt and Sudan wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the Ethiopian highlands for goodness sake! :heh:

Like Yemen or other Arabian countries that lack water. We could give them water if we were a wealthy and stable nation that took advantage and increased its waters. Again you're ignorant about Somalia so let me educate you.

So much water has been found underground in Woqooyi Galbeed, Togdheer, Sanaag, Nugaal, Mudug, Gedo, Bay, Bakool, Shabelle hoose and Jubba hoose. So much water has also been found in Sheikh mountain, Daallo mountain, and Galgala mountain. With this much water, it can provide the whole nation for a long period of time very easily but the problem is we don't have the money and technology to dig it up and distribute it to the whole country.

Plus, do you how much water seasonal rivers and rainwater has which eventually ends up in the ocean? If we manage to block all of it and save it in a certain location then wallahi we'll have so much water that we'll start giving it to Yemen and other countries that lack water.

Jubba and Shabelle rivers can be increased by planting trees near the river and increasing the water flow from its tributaries, so Ethiopia is not to worry.

We can turn Nugaal river into a perminent river stretching from Sheikh mountain to Eyl.

Somalia has no deserts by the way, so the places you see that aren't fertile are basically dry soil that simply needs irrigation and it can become a rich fertile soil easily. If we plant more trees then there will be more rainwater increasing the waters even at a greater height.

What states or empires did Somalis have? None that are signifcant, maybe a few minor coastal city states. This lack of pre-colonial political organization is why Somalis have a hard time building competent states.

Kazakhs were under Russian empire since 18th century, they know what a state is and does.

Arab countries have more water Underground than on top, in fact they have more natural aquifers than most European countries. Why it is a desert is the earth changing in size and shape. A place with a near by water source will have plant life, check an oasis.

It is not simple to fix dry soil, it can take hundred of years to make somalia green by planting trees. I remembered the northern lands are rock you can't grow plants with rock.

Yemen is cursed because man made war cause shortage in water, we have water but we cannot afford on our national budget to make blockades like beivers. If want a blockade ask every useful idiot with a big faanax to make a beaver dam so you can avoid paying green.

Not even close, A small class of well-educated people are needed and the rest should be manufacturing and Tafe slaves but Somalis are poor, hungry and uneducated people so they don't make for good revolutionaries to change the state of the country :bell:

Even if East Asians lived in Somalia, it would still be a shithole. We have the worst land in Sub Saharan Africa.

As for Bantus and Nilotics, allahu calam.

This is Burundi:

Burundi_sat.png

90 % arable land(pure volcanic soil, possibly the best land in the world), no malaria, moderate weather, an endless supply of fresh water in Lake Tanganyika(18 % of freshwater in the world) and a 10 million population. Yet a GDP of 3 billion which is less than half of Somalia.

@Amun imagine if Somalis had this land?
