I saw this on IG and thought I should share.

Less than 1 in 3 Somalis can read the Latin script.

Discuss.

IMO to clarify, I think it’s cap. Over 50% of ppl back home are younger than 25 and most of them have done some sort of schooling.

Somalias urbanisation rate is also pretty good so I don’t think reer baadiyo is holding us back.

I think Latin script literacy is at 50% and Arabic script literacy is at 90%.

@Apollo what surprises me is that Egypt is put at 75% when they use the Arabic script.

Wouldn’t virtually every Egyptian know how to read Arabic because of the Quran or Bible?

That's quite true although I disagree with the statistics. It's a bit flawed tbh.
I feel like the map is displaying inaccuracies.

If you ask a Somali to write his or her name in Arabic then he or she have would have no difficulties. That is the very foundation of literature in Somali household.
Every family would send their child to dugsi at a certain age unless that child has intellectual and physical disadvantages such disability or lack the mobility to coordinate then that is a different subject.
It's impossible to say that the vast majority of Somalis are illiterate, religiously they are literate, reading, reciting and writing the verses are considered the prime fundamental in Somali society.
Remember that the way we exchange stories, folklores and tales for generations remained intact which was oral. Passed from father to son and so on.
If I'm not mistaken that includes the hidden meanings behind the Gaabay and Geeraar,
a poetry known for their introspective storytelling, unique perspective and wizened narrations.
There is a reason why Somalia was referred to as the Nation of Poets.
We also had different writing scripts, Wadaad being the oldest, Kaddare few centuries ago , Boorama written during the colonial era and ofcourse Osmanya being the latest and the potential it had to becoming the ideal Somali script according to some former members of the SYL at the time but due to the Kacaan Era and the incompatibility with the usage of typewriters it wasn't in favour with government officials.
But when it comes to this topic, academically, I'm afraid that's partially true.
Illiteracy rate is rampant within Somaliweyn, when it comes to reading and writing the Latin script it's more of half the population that are inaccessible to educational facilities.
Due to circumstances, mass poverty, ruralism and 30 years of enduring the disintegration of Somalia's institution.

Educational institution being privatised contributes a major factor to illiteracy.
If there were public state run schools, I guess the damages inflicted on the Somali youth would have somewhat reversed to Somalia's prime at the time "The Golden Era" or what was known as
"Bar Ama Baro Campaign"
What the nation need is a better education, to provide the basic stationaries as books, pencils. To rewrite the national curriculum and themed textbooks and it's distribution.

In AS held territories, they control large swaths of the country and informally they operate in the cities as sleeper cells terrorising the civilians in the shadows.
That includes my besieged hometown whatever public infrastructure that were built hundreds of years ago are in ruins, there are no schools, the clinics are destroyed, all government infrastructure stripped off, to medieval times
Government buildings endured heavy artilleries since 1991 but came to an abrupt end when demolished by the armed terrorists.

Everything is written in Arabic, the use of Somali logos on stores are banned, the writings in Afsoomaali are now conducted in Arabic. And now people are forced to learn Arabic poetry instead of the tongues of their forefathers.
Children are easily mislead, indoctrinated to fight for their twisted wars, they are told
the national academic are for evil infidels.

This is dangerous for the future , it's creating a generation of ignorant illiterates.
it's almost a decade since these genocidal fanatics taunted the Somalis everywhere in Somalia
there's nothing done to eradicate this group.
The so called government, the intelligence agency, foreign operators go hand in hand with AS.
This cancer is spreading and infecting the weakened cells and lets be honest our country's immune system is stalled forget about preventing.

I don't know, not trying to be sceptical or anything, I just find it challenging that we have thousands of hard headed people driven with their egos living in the diaspora projecting their inner hatred and passing on their cuqdad to their offspring and that cycle continues.

I know this is a silly generalisation,

If Atlantis was a fallen city according to the philosophy of gaaladaan then Somalia might be it's right candidate.

Unless we come together and put our differences to the side, I'm not saying we're going to sing Kumbaya overnight, it takes a lot of growth and trust to build that foundation which
is through reconciliation and finding alternatives to deal with the bitter resentment,
then we might have a chance to topple these entities posing a sovereign threat and this false optimism of nabad may become a reality.

I know I went completely off course from the topic.

But this time, I'm not goofing around with my antics this my honest opinion on the matter.

One thing I like to add is that I'd prefer the Wadaad, Boorama or Osmanya even Kaddare it would make perfect sense.
Or fuse them all together and different characters of alphabets I believe we'll have 32 letters.

It's either what I said to choose each respectfully or fuse them and see what the results are it's about how the pronunciation matches with each letter.
Nothing wrong with the current script just needs to be updated to standard.
It's perfect although it's difficult for some I guess the consonant and vowels can be confusing and take time to learn.
All it needs are the will and action of people to implement literacy campaign.
And I addressed a handful of matters on the first comment.
