Ethiopia's foreign ministry has apologised after a map of Africa on its website incorporated neighbouring Somalia within its own borders.
"We sincerely regret any confusion and misunderstanding this incident might have caused," the statement said.
Somalia had been completely erased from the map, but the self-declared territory of Somaliland - which is not internationally recognised - was shown.
The neighbours have long been rivals, fighting borders wars in the past.
But relations between the two countries have improved since Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power last year as he has sought to defuse tensions in the region.

  • 2009: Ethiopian soldiers officially leave Somalia, but remain in the country to this day as part of the African Union intervention force fighting al-Shabab Islamist militants
  • June 2018: Ethiopia's new PM Abiy Ahmed visits Somalia to strengthen ties
  • Oct 2018: Mr Abiy's government signs a peace deal with rebels fighting for Ogaden's secession

The map has caused an uproar on social media, with Somalis saying it reveals a wider plan by Ethiopia to annex their country.
Others hit back, with their own version of a map of Africa, incorporating Ethiopia into Somalia.

Some have noticed other problems with the map published on the Ethiopian website, for example, it showed that the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo had become one country and it did not show South Sudan, which split from Sudan in 2011.
There has been no official comment from the Somali government. Former Foreign Minister Yusuf Garaad welcomed the removal of the map, but queried how and why it was drawn in the first place.
The Ethiopian foreign ministry's statement said it was unsure how the "unacceptable" map had "crept in on the website", which is currently offline, but said its technical team was working to ensure its security.

Probably a genuine mistake. Either some intern has copied a map off some nationalist twitter account and unknowingly posted it or accidentally filled in Microsoft Paint. If it was political, they would erase Eritrea before Somalia

This is plausiable in a ww3 scenario. We have no aircraft or air defense system, our military is poor and our terrain is mainly flat with kenyan and ethopians troops already stationed in strategic location.

This isnt the 1900 were we had an advantage of influence.

This could be the harsh reality in coming years if america and china decide too set it off.

They will wipe us out, and the remaining langaabs will be put on reservations to chew khat and bicker at who to blame.
:mjcry:what a burden to leave the somalis who will come after us.

If this ever happened Ethiopia would find it very troublesome to invade Somalia as Somalis would be getting aid from the muslim world. (Which would parallel Ukraine Russia war)

Somalis would almost be successful in getting Ogaden back. However Ethiopia’s PM would rush to the UN and say this is a g3nocide and get the collective backing from the western world.

Somalis would suffer massive losses and get pushed back into a smaller version of Somalia. Ethiopia would ask for a peace treaty. The current exhausted Somali leader would accept it knowing that they lost the war.

The Somali population would blame everything on him and multiple factions would start a coup to overthrow the government and take power over the region.

However the current PM would find that as treason and would massacre everyone who tries to usurp the government.

The government falls and the only thing remaining are rival factions gunning for power.

Some parts of the nation succeed and aim to try and create a new nation with a different name, in order to try and create stability for their people. However they will never be recognised.

I feel like something similar happened twice?
