Somali self-help initiative succeeded in building a road across an entire mountain range connecting towns with no government support

This is the Shebel Mountain Range that lies in the Dambal district in Sitti Zone DDS. The Awdalite community with help from Amoud Foundation built the road that will soon be approaching almost 100km connecting the towns of Jaare (in the Awbare district), Cagaarwayne (Dambal) and soon to Araabi (Dambal). These are some aerial shots.

There has been 0 government involvement.

Have they decided how to maintain these roads ? I think the biggest problem in Africa is maintenance. They work hard building it but time and environment can change it all back to what it was before.

Road maintenance is easier than building a road so if they put their minds to it then ofcourse

It's in the Somali Region of Ethiopia. When you leave Jaare (Awbare, Fafan) to the northwest towards Dambal district (Sitti), you come across a huge mountain range called Shebel. It's named after a very old settlement that was a key old trading hub connecting Harar to the Somali coast.

They've already been conserving a lot of the trees. The local xeer is that anyone who cuts trees will be punished
