I think this is multifaceted, in one case, being able to carry a gun elicits more protection and security, it also invites far more liklihood of a criminal being able to secure a gun themselves increasing the chances of being shot. The odds of survival are better in the UK, although criminal's are able to source guns illegally, it's still far more difficult. Being a cop is not a safe occupation nevertheless.
