Somali parents who use their kids as a retirement policy

I don’t know if other cultures do this but I find it sad that Somali parents use their kids as a bank account. Whenever the kids finish school, or even have a job they hit them up. One girl told me her mom suggested to her she use her financial aid money to buy her dahab, one a guy told me his father asked for money so he could get married to a second wife in Kenya. If I ever have kids I would never expect them to find me while they live in poverty.

My mother told her sons we were her retirement plan and we are honoured by it.

My parents fled a war zone and came to the uk without a lick of English.

Yet she was able to pay for years of extra tuition for me and my brothers.

We all pool in money to buy our parents things.

They have done far more for me than I can ever repay in 100 lifetimes.

They are not materialist and wish we save our money on ourselves but we pay for their basic necessities and gifts.

Maybe my situation is different as my parents had many sons so it’s not a big burden.

Islamically I would also need to provide for my sisters if I had any.

That’s how our religion works.

It’s your duty to take care of your parents after they’ve been taking care of you for so long. It’s morally right in Islam and it seems fair.

Broke ass mfer 😂

Not just how our religion works. Also our culture and it makes sense.

I think it depends.

It's okay to send money to our parents when they retire in Somalia. Their circumstances was different, fleeing war, language barrier in a new country, most didn't go to college etc

However, our generation should do better. We have the option to go to school and have a career so we should not burden our children and/or expect them to support us financially..

Your parents fled a war torn nation so you can eat whatever and whenever you like, go to school whenever you like and build your career and future of your own choosing. Being your parents retirement fund is flex.

So it is ok for a father to ask his son for money to marry another wife? Or a mother to ask her daughter for her financial aid money?

This.

It is more common than you think. I know 2 families in my city whose fathers went back home, married a second wife as soon as the children graduated college.

What you'd expect from a well adjusted responsible father is to help his children find spouses to begin the next chapter of their life but these selfish Peter pans not only guilt trip their adult children to send them money to support the new wife and children, they also abandon the first wife that stucked with him through thick and thin..

What's worse is that they'll marry a young woman and die off. Then expect their kids from the first wife to send money to his 2nd wife, kids from his 2nd wife and raise them. I know this from personal experience :susp:My idiotic grandfather left a bunch of half siblings for my mother and her full siblings to constantly send money to. Made already tight finances even tighter.:birdman:

That's right, diaspora raised people, should teach their children how to save, financial literacy, and leave them land and gold to inherit. Each generation needs to plant trees for the next generations to use for shade.

Lol I’m building a house in Somalia and I’ll tell my mom to rent it and that money will sustain her and I’ll wash my hands off I can’t do monthly payments

Why wouldn’t you want to be your parents retirement plan

I can’t even imagine how much money they must have spent raising me and 9 other kids

now that I am able to help and contribute I give them anything they want

also why I want to have as much kids as possible inshallah
