Could this have been an ancient instrument that Somalis used?

Somalis, sudanis, ethiopians and eritreans all have their versions but videos online show that that instrument is played exclusively by somali bantus

Whilst the origin is unclear its common amongst other Horner groups as you mentioned. I donโ€™t think it would be correct to assume that its introduced to us by southern bantu as it has a Somali sounding name when the place these Somali bantus were sourced it called Nyatiti, Ndongo, and other names.

One thing we do know majority of the people who play this instrument are southern bantu but that doesnโ€™t indicate a southern bantu origin.
