Abstract
Consanguineous marriages have been practiced since the early existence of modern humans. Until now, consanguinity is widely practiced in several global communities with variable rates. The present study was undertaken to analyze the effect of consanguinity on different types of genetic diseases and child morbidity and mortality. Patients were grouped according to the types of genetic errors into four groups: Group I: Chromosomal and microdeletion syndromes. Group II: Single gene disorders. Group III: Multifactorial disorders. Group IV: Diseases of different etiologies. Consanguineous marriage was highly significant in 54.4% of the studied group compared to 35.3% in the control group (P < 0.05). Consanguineous marriages were represented in 31.4%, 7.1%, 0.8%, 6%, 9.1% among first cousins, one and a half cousins, double first cousins, second cousins and remote relatives respectively in the studied group. Comparison between genetic diseases with different modes of inheritance showed that recessive and multifactorial disorders had the highest values of consanguinity (78.8%, 69.8%, respectively), while chromosomal disorders had the lowest one (29.1%). Consanguineous marriage was recorded in 51.5% of our cases with autosomal dominant diseases and in 31% of cases with X linked diseases, all cases of mental retardation (100%) and in 92.6% of patients with limb anomalies (P < 0.001). Stillbirths, child deaths and recurrent abortions were significantly increased among consanguineous parents (80.6%, 80%, 67%) respectively than among non consanguineous parents. In conclusion, consanguineous marriage is significantly higher in many genetic diseases which suggests that couples may have deleterious lethal genes, inherited from common ancestor and when transmitted to their offsprings, they can lead to prenatal, neonatal, child morbidity or mortality. So public health education and genetic counseling are highly recommended in our community.

It's risky even for another clan lol, even 2nd and 3rd cousins is risky and I believe most of us are around 2nd and 3rd cousins. 23andMe was showing me beautiful 2nd and 3rd cousins from Paternal side and I never met them, they're in Canada and all over too.
I'm not good with genetic stuff FYI.

Chances are one person who replies to this post may share a great grandfather with me lol.

I feel you, and of course I'm aware of all that. I do have some ideas to try and bring call center jobs there. We can outbid Phillipines for T-Mobile call center contract since Somalia is different time zone and Somalis can often understand and speak English and read/use computers in Somalia. There is high speed in Somalia and people can just work from home doing call center jobs. They won't pay as high as in US but it should be enough to survive on.

I was just talking to a T-Mobile Support person the other day when refilling and I can hear the Rooster making morning calls behind her, it was becoming morning for her and for me afternoon.

People in Somalia just need English communication and simple reading and simple computer literacy to qualify. There are loads of US companies who would get a contract with Somalia if we have better cheaper hourly rate than Malaysia or Phillipines. Then we can get a lot of jobs and stability to Somalia.

As for the Shabaab, they are Evil and wrecked havoc on Somalia, they even recently killed a young doctor lady who graduated. America did good job bringing more training and stability to Somali forces so they can fo battle them. Mogadishu needs tighter security and surveillance cameras in every street to monitor any trucks or vans that can potentially be carrying explosives. 1 truck can kill 300 people.

China has been growing in Africa a lot lately and even has factories and warehouses in China. We can maybe get China to bring jobs to Somalia too.

fam you can just marry someone from another tribe. both of my parents are full somali and alhamdulillah all siblings are healthy and my mom had her latest at 46. my grandma had her last child at 49! and they are both healthy. only problem is when your marrying someone who is first or second cousin. 3rd isnt even that bad unless they all stayed within eachother. than yeh marry someone completely different from you.

I saw a lot of European/portugese, British Somali mixes lately. Many are being born to interacial Somali and other mixes.
