I'm not gunna lie if you had told me 10 years ago the somali community in the west was going to be fully immersed in their culture I wouldn't have believed it. I swear in 2012 north americans (canadaians especially) somalis barely knew how to speak somali and didn't know shit about their culture. What do you guys think caused this cultural shift. From what I had seen...... in canada the government brought in alot of new generation somalis frm 2010-14 but they were still an insignificant amount to change anything. Then the trump fiasco had thousands on thousands of somalis exiting the us and entering canada (gala canada). At the same time all those somalis that tahrib frm somalia to south america and Mexico all came to Canada cause of our weird law that allows any immigrant that pass thru two countries (usa,mexico) can enter the third (canada) and claim citizenship with no risk of deportation. The perfect shitstorm that led to the eventual takeover and cultural change by the foreign born somalis. Even in Mn I can tell the foreign born out number and took over. I remember visiting mn twice (2012),(2014) and my peers there where more americanized and didn't know that much of somali culture and now in 2022 it's like everyone became super somali with a hint of american. Niggaz are tellin me they goin to somali concerts (suldaan,sharmaboy) like they american rappers and everyone doin dhanto know lol. I also noticed like toronto (last year) I'm seeing the same thing in Mn where u visibly see more foreign born somalis(fobs) in the city than north american born somalis (the stats dont make sense they shouldn't be out numbering us, we were here longer). I remember last year a 50 y.o yardii store owner tellin me he had been dealing with so many gala Canada's the past couple years that he can see a somali and instantly tell which type he is as we have totally different mannerisms and how the gala have a devilish workrate (harder drive to achieve). So am i just trippin or yall notice the foreign born somalis (fobs,gala canada,tahrib ppl or whatever u wanna call em) takin over the north american community and how we started to take on more somali culture by copying them.

Your right, In the UK, the last time good amount of Somali fobs entering the country was in the early 2000s, that was the last time where fob Somalis where immigrating to the U.K. en masses from the eu and other places.

From 2010s, especially after brexit, hardly any fob Somalis, were immigrating to the U.K. due to really tough immigration laws and now that we are out of the eu, Somalis from the eu will now need a strict visa etc to settle in the U.K..

In North America, Sweden, Germany, it’s different, that’s the destination where Somalis who want to take refuge/immigrate can easily do so, as you can see those countries had received many refugees/immigrants from Somalia, especially sweden and Canada, so you will see those two countries are the least westernised Somalis, as there are so many recent arrivals fresh from the boat in those two countries, lesser extent the USA.

Here in the U.K., the old generation who arrived in the early 1990s, are starting to get old/die out, the Reer U.K. somalis are the most westernised diaspora community. Overwhelming nowadays, there are more British born Somalis than Somalis who were born in Somalia, due to significant drop in refugees/immigrants, and this causes major impact on embracing Somali culture etc, Alhamdullah reer U.K. still have the Deen, but barely know their mother tongue anymore.

I went to Minneapolis and Columbus ohio couple of years ago to visit family etc, and I was hugely shocked, in terms of the amount of Somali fobs compared to USA born Somalis, it felt like I was in somalia but different environment etc, the way they dress etc, looked like fresh from the refugee camp in Kenya, at the same time, the Somali culture is alive and well, in North America, Sweden etc, sadly it’s dying in the U.K., due to what I said.

How old are you ? I think you’re from a generation where that was once true. A guy I know is a wedding photographer and this summer it’s like one in three weddings he does are mixed. He shot a Somali guy + Ghanaian girl wedding on Friday

Over exaggerated, most Somalis marry within their own and a lot even within their own qabil. I have been noticing Somali nationalism creeping back into the Somalis in the west, from Somali songs to represent their country and flag.
