Reer wuqooyi and Jabuuti: should we switch to Galaal script? Wanlaweynistan aka the South should also adopt it too?

I think Galaal script is not perfect but it cant be worse than the scrip that the MX dude cribbed from Galaal

We have a great script that works just fine, it just needs few improvements like shortening double vowels and differentiating between words like inan (male) and inan (female), the word is spelled the same way but pronounced differently :)

this script doesn't work fine at all. It's in shambles actually. Words get too long and it's hard to read along at times.

Also, there is no set spelling and we don't even know if some words are one word or two words. The latin script also looks ugly.

for example dh can have multiple pronounciations. You can use the "indian d" like in "dhig" or you can have sort of an r sound like "adhi".

words like "doqon" and "doqon" are spelled exactly the same but the intonation can tell you if it's male or female, there isn't a way to fix that in latin script.

using 2 vowels to stretch a vowel sound is also stupid because some vowels are stretched halfway and not fully. like in laascaanood. Also, there is no "eye" sound that you can spell like in "biyodhacay". ay can also be pronounced as ey.

I think creating our own unique script would be beneficial and convenient. Currently 90% of Somalis in Somalia are uneducated and if there is a time for a literary revolution then it should be when Somalia starts developing and educating its people.

we don't have to create a script from scratch but looking at historically used scripts and adapting them would be nice. Revising the whole alphabet would be best imo, I already mentioned some problems to @Jiron but that's just the tip of the surface.

alongside this new script an official dictionary that solidifies spelling and grammar of the Somali language would be ideal. Rn everybody just sounds out words and spells it how they think, which is extremely informal. If you check whatsapp most somalis on there just use voice notes because they can't be bothered to spell and read.

I don't mind or have any issue if you Landers adapt that script in your unrecognized country, we Puntites should also adapt the Osmaniya script and leave that Ajnabi inspired latin script behind.:bell:

Osmanya script is a good one ngl, with a bit of tweaking it could be used by all somalis.

Lets not blame written Somali or the author Shire Jamaac AUN for the lack of standards in present day publishing, I mean what can we expect from uneducated taxi drivers in norway opening a domain and calling themselves news reporter.

I agree with @BoqorkaChess the words get too long and it’s sometimes difficult to read. One thing I like though is that spelling is easy

I wouldn’t mind trying out the far-wadaad script as well,

Just look at this letter in Far wadaad written from Berbera

We Marehan should adopt the Adal script used in Harar. Why should we adopt Cismaani barbarian script?

let's try and keep this civil man. this isn't TC.

Also creating scripts for tribes is too divisive. One script should be created and settled on by all somalis.

Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the Marehan were reported to have lived in an area that extended from Bender Ziyade on the Gulf of Aden to beyond Ras el-Khail on the Indian Ocean, or much of northern Somalia.

You are probably confusing him with another Shire, the author has passed away.

@BoqorkaChess you cannot base your understanding of written somali on newsoutlets but on the actual early writings of Shire Jamaac as well as his introduction Naxwaha afsomaliga, of course we need to allow the written language to evolve but first lets learn it properly.

I know, I'm not some type of scholar. But the current script definitely needs work and at some point in the near future we should get learned scholars together to start fixing somali literature.

Of course I agree with that, but arabic or some weird habeshi puke looking script is not evolving its the exact opposite. Maybe changing long vowels into a more compact single letter form and few changes in the grammar is all we need.

I am conservative when it comes to Somali language written and spoken, I am anti-loan words if they are not deeply rooted in our language, and I am pro-Somali words being used for things we do not have a indigenous word for yet, Somali language is vast and its just up to us to rediscover it.
