intelligibility of Af-Maay has to do with ones proficiency of Af-Maxaa, the better understanding you have of the standard language, the more you'll understand the dialect.

Can you understand maay?

Some words, but nothing intelligible to decipher the meaning of the message, or to hold a conversation; I'll tell you about my first encounter with af Maay in Cleveland (OH), when I have got some time.
