As for the show, well it's a classic case of immitating kuffarka. Imagine if Umar ibn al khattab were alive and saw this. Ofcourse they would come up with reasons why they would do it. They might even mention the drought. But you cannot do something that is makruh and haram for an objective that is worthwhile anymore than saying bismillah before drinking alcohol.
