I was casually scrolling the progressive islam subreddit(which was a mistake) as I came across an interesting but stupid post.

It was a 30 year old syrian american woman who describes herself as a "secular cultural muslim" which essentially means you don't practice Islam actively through things like prayer but you still celebrate Eid and the such.

My immediate first thought was "that makes you a non muslim." I scrolled down to see all the comments and they're encouraging her bullshit.

But even on social media on anonymous reddit accounts they still claim "cultural muslim" lmao.

A lot of them call themselves that not cause they fear being ostracized but because they like the aesthetics of Islam without any of the actual effort it takes to be a Muslim.

that subreddit is crazy. there was this one post that was made as a thread here. basically op was stuck between choosing a salafi doctor and a white gaal and all the comments told her to choose the gaal

I honestly think this is just an American Muslim experience, you'd get laughed out of the masjid if you said that in Australia and UK Muslims seem to be the most strict out of the Western ummah diasporas.

some either believe in allah or a higher power. others are hadith rejectors. they’re all deviant and would say mainstream sunnnism is extremism

You would be surprised how common they are. Most carab and Muslim timojilic fall into this category.

It seems in the west most people only pay lip service to religion. It’s rare to see people that are devout and practicing
