On the question if they are or aren't al shabaab means a fundamental misunderstanding of the way al shabaab works. Al shabaab is a franchise, not a traditional hierachical army or organisation. Any group that has grievances with any other group calls themselves al shabaab and in that way ''justifies'' their violence by using al shabaab language by calling their enemies kaffirs.
