A Russian Su-25 warplane was shot down above Idlib province by Syrian rebels, the first Russian fighter jet downed above Syria since 2015, and its pilot was reportedly killed. A Russian defense ministry official confirmed the plane was shot down: "The plane was flying around the de-escalation zone of Idlib," the Russian military stated.

The plane is said to have been downed in a rebel-held area of north-western Syria near Maasaran in Idlib.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the the pilot ejected himself from the downing aircraft and survived the crash, but was killed during a fight with terrorists. Photos and a video posted on Twitter reportedly show his dead body: "The pilot reported on a bailout in an area controlled by rebels Jabhat al-Nusra. When conducting a fight with terrorists, the pilot died," the Defense Ministry said.

Jeez, Putin is gonna karbaash all these rebels. This event could be an ww3 accelerator, these are likely the same rebels the US deems as moderates and had backed them in the past. Especially Mccain.

Turkey shot down a Russian jet and killed a pilot and it only resulted in rapproachement and stronger ties between the two nations. It also isn't the first time Russians have been killed by various rebel groups in the conflict, so the idea anything major will result from this is silly

Russian casualties aren't anything special, it is to be expected during a war. But, this is only the second jet to be downed in Syria since 2015.

normally flying at high altitudes and out of range for the rebel missiles.
So the question is - at what altitude was the plane flying and what kind of missile brought it down.

If the plane was brought down by modern ground-based missile that means it was given to the jihadists by a nation state or possibly operated by a foreign military. Which will definitely anger Russia and may lead to something more serious imo.

@sgfrmtheblock are you an expert on fighter jets ? I'm always fascinated about how one of them gets shot down.

These rebels are in a big disadvantaged when you averaging 2 shoot downs for the past 4 years. Russia carried out 2k air strikes since that time and these dudes only shot down 2. I think that 2015 shooting down was due to the pilot fooling around but this time around even Western media is suspecting the rebels have received a MANPAD or something only that can be given to them a state actor.

I suspect it has to be Saudia

What do you think.

Btw what kind of SAM can bring it down ? Do you need a radar cooperation?

Not at all. What I do know is that man held anti-aircraft, air to surface missiles and portable air defense are high tech equipment no simple terrorist can operate. Also, the rebels have been more successful with the downing of syrian jets with mostly air missiles from Libyan bunkers. So their efforts haven't been completely futile.

The US Congress actually authorized arming the Syrian rebels with MANPADS back in 2016.

Also, the Su-25 is technically not a fighter but a ground attack plane for close air support. So simpler systems would be able to bring it down. Things like stingers and other smaller shoulder-fired rockets could do the job i think.

The missiles can be either infra rad guide (heat seaker) or radar guided but, since most of the details are still a bit grainy we will have to wait and see.

Is this a game changer ? Should Russia be concerned

Not really in war you expect casualties. Russia has lost a few helicopters, two SU25's and maybe around 45-55 personnel to various causes over a three year period. I am sure Russia will respond in the area with a lot of force.

What is important though is to consider who pulled the trigger, western special forces troops or jihadists trained by western special forces.

I absolutely doubt it was a Western source.

Unlike Obama, Putin really underestimated the situation. He thought he could flush them out within a year, but now it's been 3 years with no results whatsoever. Obama was smart enough to take his hands off that mess and Putin is seeking reasons to withdraw. This war is draining their meager resources as Russia is said to average 60 airstrikes a day since the intervention.

Syria could be to Russia what Afghanistan was to the Soviets.

False propaganda on your part.

Actually Putin achieved his goal and it was just to have the regime in Damascus survive. He is aware that Syria is too far gone to be patched together and that it will be identical to the cursed Somalia
