Russia - Somaliland relations

Remember the rumblings from 2017 about Russia possibly recognizing Somaliland in exchange for a naval base in Zeila?

News sites still report on this possibility :cosbyhmm:

Bob Hein is a naval strategist with connections in the industry. MENAFN is the Middle East North Africa Financial Network based in Jordan that reports on economy and trade, IT and telecom, financial markets, oil and energy, agriculture, general industry, retail and services, transport and tourism .

Back in 2017 Russia’s deputy consular to Djibouti, Yury Kourchakov, became the first Russian diplomat to visit Somaliland in 38 years. Kourchakov met with Foreign Minister Saad Ali Shire during his trip to discuss the need for enhancing ties between the two countries. He also toured the Soviet Unions old base in Berbera

Later that year a delegation from SL traveled to Moscow for a visit .

There’s definitely some interest on Russia’s side. We also know the US is pushing back against the Chinese who want to spread their influence across Africa. Would it be smart for the US to allow Russia to move into Somaliland?

I feel like news sources keep dangling this possibility trying to signal something to SL officials who are probably dragging their feet as they don’t want to get caught between US - Russian political spats

There is a big possibility that they want to increase their influence in the horn.

Keep pushing that fake news waryee
Warya is it fake news that Russian officials visited Hargeisa or that they invited SL officials to Moscow??

Clearly there are some type of interest from Russia. Doesn't mean they will recognize us or build a military base.

Russian women tend to be peng I wouldn’t mind Russia building some kind of beach resort and sending their blonde haired tings down to chill there :banderas:
For real would be lit Somaliland taking Ws lately watch how Mogadishu turns into an alshabab state after amisom leave our chances of recognition look very good right now 2019/2020 inshallah

If somaliland has competent leaders they might be able to finesse recognition without Russian prescence if the US fears of China/Russia influence in East Africa is as real as the media suggests it is.

So far the only reason why Africa is still held to its colonial borders is because the West are still the only ones largely involved with Africa and they set those borders. The worlds other two super powers Russia and China have been largely absent in Africa. Now they are getting more involved and can directly or indirectly change the makeup of African boundaries

Yeah I already said it’s old news but the topic keeps resurfacing. The article I linked was published on the 18th , 5 days ago. The US has been growing increasingly wary of Chinese activities in Africa . This is why I made this thread if America is trying to deter China in Africa they would do everything to deter Russia getting a base in Zeila when China already has one in Djibouti . That would be a disaster for America and their allies

Ethiopia investing in Zeila is but a dream. Ethiopia has grand plans to manage 4 ports across Somalia but they’ve never even managed 1 port to show they would be up for the task. It’s a bad bet . Maybe Ethiopia can do a partnership with other entities like they do in Berbera but these Ethiopians haven’t even invested in regions inside their landlocked country. It’s a dream to expect them to invest in other regions especially more than a couple times They alre already investing in Berbera and Eritrea. I think their plate is full for the time being
