@Abdalla it is not even true. The Italians really developed southern Somalia, especially the Shabelle Valley. The British barely did anything in Somaliland. They built 2 or 3 highschools and Berbera port. By 1960, the south was much further ahead of the north in almost every sector.
The British were probably the worst colonizers after the Portuguese and the Belgians.
I read the italians didn't like 'larger' clans in the south and empowered 'minorities' a-lot into position who they knew they could control. Like my 'awoowe' on my mother side was 'governor of nugaal' and he was Nugaal. Minorities benefited a-lot from Italians in the South who saw a 'lifeline' fearing the 'landheere' clans.
That's why the SYL is full of 'landheere' clans and not smaller minorities like 'hawadle, murusade, leelkase'. As for infrastructure yeah no doubt, Italians wanted to make the south a 'second home' so they really invested and turned it into a real city. The Brits were not interested in living in SL, beyond ensuring they had 'access' to bring soldiers to defend the indian trade link. SL is and was always useless. They came into Somalia very much 'unprepared' mentally, economically, socially and even till today you see the lack of 'political' skills as 'emotions' like their ancestors. They can't hang with the South in politics and I don't blame them for asking for separation.
The only way SL is getting power is thru 'affirmative' action like African Americans no joke, it's not thru 'sheer brilliance or brain power' looooooool. Their considered some of the most backward people in Somalia even till 'today'. Nothing much has changed. They civilized a bit with the 1960-1991 but it was only 30 years and not all of them, just their 'leaders' lol. Their people are total XOOLO
