Rant: Selective Empathy and virtue signaling in the Somali Community

Somalis don't have invaders, other than the hate we harbor for themselves. It’s a stark contrast to the Palestinian and Israeli conflict, where distinct cultural, historical, and political differences fuel the ongoing strife. If Somalis can dissect and understand such a complex foreign issue, why can’t we recognize and celebrate our own similarities? We’re bound by language and faith, yet divided by self-inflicted wounds. It’s high time we confront this irony, turning the mirror on ourselves to foster unity and healing from within. Our shared identity should be the catalyst for peace and prosperity, not a silent witness to our internal discord.

It's frustrating to see some in the Somali community, both in Somalia and Diaspora, loudly supporting the rights of Palestinians but ignore the issues in our own homeland. It feels hypocritical. We share a common language and religion in Somalia, tools that could be powerful in fixing our own problems. Yet, we're focused elsewhere, showing support for others while our own house is in disarray. We need to wake up, face our own issues, and realize that we have the power to make positive changes at home. Only then can our support for others be truly meaningful and free of hypocrisy.

if your own house was on fire, you'd need to put out those flames before you could run over to help put out your neighbor’s

In sha Allah Palestine will soon be free 🇵🇸
