Puntland Needs An Urban Economy

I am frustrated that the PL govt only is seeking to develop an agagrian economy such as livestock, farming, fishery, and frankincense. I am not saying to stop these rural activities as they are needed but it won't create an urban economy, all our towns will still have high unemployment rates.

We need to discuss with local business people how we can create a sustainable economic model for urban areas. Some of the areas we need to discuss is if we want an external economy, internal economy, or a mixed economy. If we seek an external economy, we need to find markets and establish contacts with different nations and assess what they're 'needs' are and then discuss with PL business people to fill the gap by investing into that industry.

We need to also establish what type of products we want to produce and what is their final product value in the global market and will this achieve our PL economic revival agenda. I suggest we don't waste our time in 'petty trade' products as these are low cost items and this will only mean the generated revenues and employee incomes will be low which will effect also the taxation revenue of our government.

We must begin taking this serious and discuss a realistic job creation policy for PL, where our locals will be employed and also recieve an income that can generate 'spending' into the service sector which will also grow as a response. We must look at also creating an internal economy. I suggest since construction is happening at the moment we need to develop the supply chain in PL. Let's have a nail producing warehouse, windows, tiles, flooring, concrete and other needed raw material.

PL is around 4 million, yet 70% are under 30. It's crucial any economic direction we take needs to ensure maximum employment numbers. It must also address our need that each worker is given a reasonable income that can 'spurt' growth thru spending which will be critical for our hospitality n service industry as these industries are side-effect that grows on it's own if the population have industries. We must also look at industralizing our economic activities so it can generate more products, all manual methods needs to be banned in PL by the government. All economic activities must be reviewed by our govt and a fine given if anyone is caught operating manually and not using appropriate machines for their industry. A manual economic is a low return industry.

PL has to quickly fly thru this stage of infrastructure development, we been spending a decade on it and it's time we move into the next phase of development which is job creation era for our urban centers.

We also need Banking infrastructure, the financial capital needs to be available for new start ups and ideas but also for employees who want to invest into property or vehicles and other economic activities. I've spoken about the importance of banking in other threads so I won't delve to deeply into now.

We can eventually pay for our own infrastructure needs such as roads, hospitals, schools, and water if we quickly generate workers who pay taxes, the more workers, the more taxes to government. We need a job creation policy so we can increase our government taxation revenue. How and what we target in our job creation policy will be critical to our economic growth. We need government to create immediate 'housing zones' that are subsidized to average worker income so they can immediately generate growth for our construction companies.

This current Un-used land is worthless, at least if it's subsidized, it can be invested by the new employees in urban ares while this will allow for our banks, construction company and supply chains revenues to grow which means more taxes all around for the government.

An internal economy cud mean
Construction supply chains located in Bosaso servicing all Somali-wayn
Medication warehouse that produces generic medicines for the african continent
Creating technical support centers in Puntland for major products globally
Creating universities of high standards so we can make money of local and international students.

An External Economy cud mean
Creating products that have low suppliers globally and targetting various global markets. Low supply and moderate to high demand will translate into wealth gains. So targetting the low supply agriculture products for example, low supply fishing products, and so forth. The greatest economic model wud be to dominate the 'value chain' with Puntite workers at all stages of production to transport to eventual market

I like your thinking Dr, but when you say that we need to develop our own supply chain by establishing our own nail producing warehouse, windows, tiles, flooring, concrete and other needed raw material etc. How will that be viable when it would be much easier for a construction company to just import all those things? I think the only solution would be if the government is able to protect small local businesses from competition by external businesses. This can be by setting up import traffic. That’s the only way I see for puntland government to defend domestic industries and build an incentives for the construction company in Puntland to buy windows, tiles, concrete and other building materials.

Well simple, this is where govt intervention is needed like happened for the west after world wara 2. We need to set such a high tariff on imports that business people revert to developing the industries locally. I suggest we keep this policy on taxing imports so business ppl find it cheaper to develop locally for at least 50 years or untill such time monopoly local companies with no competitor is also dangerous like 'garowe water supply' as that is local and they're is not much competition which leads to crazy pricing structures.

But we need some moderate level of tariffs to encourage local production and after such time open up imports and they can compete on free market principle. But that time is not now as we are in the early stages of our development and need as much govt protection as possible.

Lets begin high tariff on the following items

1. Nails
2. Pasta
3. Windows
4. Cement
5. Doors

This will automatically result in business ppl creating warehouses locally to produce these items to avoid the heavy tariffs. We can maybe exclude nails as they are 'cheap item' but the rest are serious money earners and shud be left to locals to dominate.

@4cryingoutloud I can envision PL sending door and windows and cement to all Somali-wayn thru Bosaso n Garacad port, while we have a medication factory producing 'items' that the african continent needs and exporting it out of puntland. We can dominate two key industries the construction supply chain and medication warehouses for the continent which is untapped

Every municipality in Puntland needs to be top notch like Garowe. Garowe receives more international funding than Bosaso because it has a better local government. WB and other development orgs work directly with mayors when implementing projects. There's a lot of red tape and bureaucracy when dealing with foreign institutions so that's why it's important to have young dynamic leaders at district levels.

People are always looking at presidency when you can be even more impactful as a district commissioner. Now Bosaso and Garowe are upgrading the electricity and water grids, there will be a incentive to create secondary manufacturing businesses.

Many of the business ideas we discuss on here exist in Puntland but they do not have the right marketing and supply chain. It's also important for Puntland to have trade representatives in places where we have a diaspora. They should be easy to look up and seek advice from. India, Pakistan, Oman, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola are among the places where there's a large Puntite diaspora for education and trade.
