Kinda crazy how North Americans view a European language as something 'ethnic'.

Anything that's not Anglo-Saxon/British in origin is viewed as "ethnic/other" over in the USA. It's even gotten to the point were Americans of British origin just consider themselves as Ethnic Americans.

There's several reasons why they now just identify as "American", main one being their ancestors came over centuries ago; another one being they lose none of their heritage by simply just calling themselves American as opposed to "British-American" because the American identity is an offshoot of the British/Anglo-Saxon identity. Others [Germans, Irish & Italians] can't do the same by identifying as "ethnic Americans" otherwise they'd lose their heritage, hence why hyphenated American identities are a thing.
