No more Baris! India bans export of non-basmati rice

The Indian government has banned the export of non-basmati white rice in an effort to make rice more affordable and available in their country. The rice ban has triggered stockpiling, panic buying and fear amongst rice consumers around the world. The timo jilacs are hoarding rice around the world. This will have a devastating impact on global supply, food security and prices. The price of rice is expecting to increase dramatically in the coming days. No more going to your local maqaayad and getting baris.

Somalia have a lot of ari though we exported to Arab countries.
Alhamdillah we are self sufficient in livestock. The somali government needs to invest in rice production in the agricultural rich towns like jowhar. The somalia government literally imported $143 million dollars of rice from india last year. We are not like the gulf countries in which their land isn't suitable for arable farming. We have the potential to become self sufficient in rice production.

Very true. We need to have a moderate consumption of rice. I know some somali families that have baris almost everyday. That is very unhealthy. If you want to eat baris than aim to eat brown rice. No wonder we have high rates of cholesterol, Diabetes and Blood pressure in our communities. Young boys in their early 20s already have high cholesterol subhanallah. Eat healthy and look after yourself.

If I was president of Somalia the first thing I’d invest in would be agriculture we need to become food secure in the near future

We have vast farmland in South-central Somalia that have the potential to help us become self sufficient in rice production. Jowhar alone can handle Somalias rice consumption demand and in return help Somalia achieve self sufficency in rice production. We need to invest in agricultural production in South-central Somalia. The problem is security.

Yeah the problem is security definitely I’ve heard jowhar is good for rice farming I’ve seen YouTube videos about it

another problem we have is a lot of our farmers have left their land and are now idps in major cities due to a variety of reasons for example a good chunk of the IDPS in Xamar are from lower shabelle we need to encourage them back to farm once the security situation improves inshallah

Rice farmers in Somalia see no incentive to grow rice because Somalias entire market is flooded with rice imports. The local farmers can't compete with the rice imports. Also the farmers have no investors willing to process, mill and packgage the rice for them due to security concerns. There is not a single factory throughout Somalia to process and mill the rice for the local farmers. All those factors forced the rice farmers to leave their farms and become IDPs. NGOs and aid agencies are the only ones benefiting from rice imports in Somalia. The government loses alot of money every year and our food security is at risk because we are reliant on other countries.

The Somali government and local investors need to invest in building factories to process local produce. The government then needs to slowly place a tariff on rice imports to give priority to local rice consumption and encourage farmers to grow rice. When Somalia becomes self-sufficient in rice production, we can fully ban all rice imports.

Somalia faces chronic water scarcity, exacerbated by recurring droughts and conflicts. Most of the available water is primarily used for basic human needs, agriculture, and livestock. It would be impractical to divert already limited water resources to rice cultivation, which is a water-intensive crop compared to other staple foods that are currently grown in the region. It’s better the government invests in crops that are better adapted to arid conditions, such as sorghum, millet, and maize. These crops are more resilient to drought and require less water to grow, it would actually be great if soor became a staple in Somalia

We don't have to necessarily use the limited water resources in the shebelle and jubba rivers. We could install solar powered drip irrigation systems to grow rice. It's efficient, environmental friendly and affordable.

Somalis should go back to their ancestoral diet, somali men from the past looked like Greek statues even without the need of gym @Idrus If your little dictator dream does become reality make sure to enforce strict and healthy dietary laws for the general public.
Don't worry I'm already gonna put a limit on rice and pasta import
