A total of 168 suspects allegedly involved in drug trafficking were captured in a crackdown launched by the local police in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province Tuesday. Most people detained by the police during the campaign are foreigners originally from West African countries, said a late Tuesday statement by the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau, adding most of those are from Nigeria and Mali.

Thanks to Nigerian drug dealers and traffickers, Africans are being associated with crime in Asia. What can other Africans do to control our image?

It depends. Here in the gulf if Desi merchants and the like see Nigerians who are well-dressed and uppercrust looking they tend to start salivating. Nigerian oligarchs are a different breed. I've heard stories from the gold merchants that the women will just walk into a gold shop and buy 100,000 US Dollars worth of gold during that single night's visit to a single shop.

We Somali folks have a tarnished image within Africa and the world but don't go exporting our crime like this to this level... we keep our dysfunctionality within for the most part.

Somalis' image within Africa, at least within the African countries we live and work in, isn't truly "tarnished" in the sense that the Somalis in those countries didn't really do anything to deserve the disdain they get. Most Somalis in places like Tanzania, Zambia and South Africa are hardworkers since you can't really be in those countries without a visa (employment or investment) and there is no citizenship for the most part nor any social safety net. Most people are either employed some way or even rather well-off like grocery store owners, real estate developers, mall owners... that sort of thing. We end up being hated as a result cos of xenophobia and the sense that we're stealing their jobs and undermining them in their own country. The shacab tend to hate us for the same reason they hate Desis in their countries, basically. Africa isn't the western qurbo. Ain't no Somalis forming gangs in Tanzania.

Agreed. You would never hear of an international drug trafficking or sex trafficking ring organized by Somali people. Our image has been tarnished because of the civil war with other countries media propagating this, and as you said, Xenophobia.

Yeah, the power of media is amazing. The number of Arab, African and Asian shacab who are weirdly Turkey fanboys now because of all these Turkish shows is just surreal. If and when Somalia has the funds and chance we have to get on this media game, wallahi.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but India literally has more clout than us, Bollywood is huge in Somalia, Africa and the Middle East. Yoga is big now in the west, indian food is a delicacy and so on, we got a long way to go.

Horners in general have a long way to go. Xabashis seriously have no real homegrown media presence. They just get by on other Africans and NWBs idolizing them for their colonial era history which they don't even fully understand, and their Horner looks. We really need some quality shows, music, even maybe animated stuff like the Japanese someday from the region. Our people's, especially Geeljires, are loud and creative. I have no doubt they'll make a big splash of it when the time comes.
