Nigeria is 100x more violent than Somalia

350,000 deaths in the past 12 years alone. This is not even accounting for the deaths caused by ISIS, banditry, kidnappings and other criminal activities.

350,000! Al Shabab has absolutely nothing on Boko Haram when it comes to the scale of devastation it has caused. Only ~4000-5000 deaths tops are attributed to al shabab this past decade.

However Nigeria is still a functioning government, reason being the government is based in the south where as all the chaos is in the North.

Somalia on the other hand is held hostage as it’s government is based where the insurgency is strong.

Is the obvious solution not just to move the capita north? Why is this solution never even considered?

Move capital north & all the NGOs and foreign diplomats will follow and government can begin stage building in peace. Government employees no longer under constant threat of attacks & assassinations.

Doesn’t matter where the capital is exactly, anywhere north of Galkacyo will do.

My hunch is this, Somalia is so undeveloped, there isn’t anywhere but Mogadishu to host the government. There is no building like Villa Somalia anywhere else in the country. So it isn’t even a matter of political will. But my counter point to this is most government agencies already run from hotels in Mogadishu and it isn’t difficult to build a new Villa Somalia elsewhere.

There is no crime statistics in Somalia, the govt barely has the capacity to keep records for the capital let alone in the whole country.

The only place if you do include them that gathers data (to an extent) is Somaliland. When they do they and publish their report for the year on how much crime and what type they get ridiculed on here by those not from the area even tho if Somalia was functioning and gathers data from every town n city who knows how much it'll be

Nigeria has a population approximately 20 times larger than Somalia.

It is also 10 times more dense than Somalia.

Numbers are deceiving.

Hard disagree. Deaths caused by al shabab are well reported. They make sure to announce it and it’s not something they can hide anyway, car bombs, hotel assaults, assassinations etc are usually reported quickly by the media. We are not talking about petty theft and car jacking here.

Even putting their population in proportion it is still much higher than the violence in Somalia. Violence in north Nigeria is on a total different scale, they raze entire villages to the ground & kill everyone like it’s nothing. I used to peek at the Nairaland forums months ago and the photos of the killings & violence they would post daily is unbelievable, things that you never see in Somalia. Even on a per capita basis Nigeria is way more violent than Somalia.

When you put Nigeria’s population in proportion to Somalia, you still haven’t factored in density.

Because even if you divide the murders in Nigeria by the population difference in Somalia, you’re assuming that density in Nigeria and Somalia is the same.

Unless my math is completely off the mark.

Moving the Capital is big talk. Qabiil Issues will be raised. Mogadishu will always be the Capital not because of its location, but because it’s the most diverse. Anyways, these bombings and security threats are decreasing and AS only controls some Tuulos in the countryside. Their ability to attack is still alarming but this is something people have learnt to live with, moving the capital is a waste of time, resources, and will cause more issues.

Amsterdam constitutionally is the official capital city of Netherlands yet all branches of the Dutch national government are based in another city called The Hague. Don't be complacent that the FGS is relocated from Mogadishu to another city

Moving the capital as well as making Benadir state a hawiyo state is in direct conflict with 4.5, we have come so far because of 4.5 we cannot make drastic changes, changes has to be gradual. devolution of power(not all power) from Mogadishu is a step in the right direction, and thats why I support federalism.

Why not try slowly but surely developing a city or cities up north to become the new capital? Even if it takes 5 years or more, it'll be worth it if what you're saying here is true?

I might be mistaken did you not support the 13 seats for Benadir?

Mogadishu is the only card Hawiye hold if they didnt hold the capital it would tip the scales from a political draw to “Darood” domination.

Badbaado qaran holds no more importance then Hiirans silent rebellion if the capital was Kismayo or Garowe.

Let’s move capital to Galkacyo or Lascanood. We’ve given Mogadishu 30 yrs, enough is enough.
