The Ethiopian House of Federation have today approved the establishment of a new federal region, called Southern Ethiopia Regional State, carved of the current Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s (SNNP) Regional State.
When Abiy became PM in 2018, there were 9 federal regions (Somali, Oromia, Afar, Amhara, Harar, Tigray, Gambela, Benishangul-Gumuz, SNNP) and 2 charted cities (Addis, Dir Dhabe).
In 2019, Sidama Regional State was established from SNNP.
In 2021, South West Ethiopia Regional State was established from SNNP
Now, 2023, Southern Ethiopia Regional State will be established from SNNP.
With the new state approval, the former SNNP will officially come to an end. It will today comprise of 4 (SNNP, Sidama, South West, Southern Ethiopia) Regional States, bringing the total states of Ethiopia to 12 and 2 charted cities.
