New Federal Region(s) in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian House of Federation have today approved the establishment of a new federal region, called Southern Ethiopia Regional State, carved of the current Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s (SNNP) Regional State.

When Abiy became PM in 2018, there were 9 federal regions (Somali, Oromia, Afar, Amhara, Harar, Tigray, Gambela, Benishangul-Gumuz, SNNP) and 2 charted cities (Addis, Dir Dhabe).

In 2019, Sidama Regional State was established from SNNP.
In 2021, South West Ethiopia Regional State was established from SNNP
Now, 2023, Southern Ethiopia Regional State will be established from SNNP.

With the new state approval, the former SNNP will officially come to an end. It will today comprise of 4 (SNNP, Sidama, South West, Southern Ethiopia) Regional States, bringing the total states of Ethiopia to 12 and 2 charted cities.

Abiy is proving himself to be master strategist in how to play his card right. He's opposed to both ethnic based regions and large/powerful states. The former will be hard to achieve, but the latter is much easier, which is the route he's currently taking now.

Obviously, the creations of the states required referendums. But given the countless of (50+) different ethnic groups settled in SNNP, it was not hard for the locals to be convinced of creating their own, but smaller states.

SNNP was a trial project, which seems to have gone through exceptionally smooth. Abiy is not in a hurry to implement his agenda. But remember where you heard it first once you hear him move on the next federal state in a near future

Yeah, liyuu is 'officially' gone. Though, many regions haven't implemented the re-organization yet.

As far as the regions being dismantled, it depends how you view it. A total dismantlement of all regions to go back to the old regions or a complete restructure? Mostly likely not.

It will probably be like SNNP, that it would be broken into several smaller regions. The questions remains when and how it may happen? I hope not anytime soon. Don't want to be stressing about where the borders will be drawn

Even the fertile shabelle river has Karanle on it. The southern part where the degodia are adjacent to bale will be an important region too economically. I can see this happening easily in the the somali kilil. Low iq xoolos will jump on the opportunity to be given their own state. It'll easily be broken down into 3 or 4 parts

Looking it how the SNNP occurred, they are basing it on existing districts and zones (regions). If you're majority in a given district, you can be sure. But if they're mixed, you need to have everyone who settles there with you onboard.

In the Karanle group chat there were some guys who have close affiliates with members of the federal government who mentioned that Addis would propose this after the Tigray war. This will effect all regions including Amhara and Oromo. They are going to make everything equal and integrated. I feel sorry for everyone east of jigjiga . That barren region can’t sustain life let alone civilisation . The hawd will do nice. Faafaan, Sitte, Erer etc are crucial. Imey will do good. The hard working regions will be visible. No more fraud and corruption except on federal level

Yeah, the SNNP split happened in a similar manner. Just like they have many ethnicities there with different political interests, several of whom don't even get along; the same can be said about us with clans. It was easy to divide them politically.

My people are scattered all over so I don’t think this division will matter. I mean it’s not like the ones from imey will join the ones from the awash . Or the ones from Bale joining the ones from Babili . Don’t forget beesha is also in Sidame

Yeah, we’ll have to see what region is next. Abiy is currently experiencing political resistance in the Amhara region and an active war in Oromia. Let’s hope he solves those issues first
