Garowe-(Puntland Mirror) Nearly 160 students have graduated from the East Africa University Garowe Campus.

The graduation ceremony was held at the University’s compound in Garowe on Wednesday, and was attended by notable dignitaries including Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali.

The graduates are from faculties of Sharia, Public Administration, Community Development, Business Administration, Economics, Clinical Medicine, and Environmental Science, the head of the East Africa University Garowe Campus, Sheikh Mohamoud Haji Yousuf said.

The students of the faculty of Environmental Science were the first cohort who successfully completed that course in Somalia, Sheikh Mohamoud added.

Environmental scientists work on subjects like the understanding of earth processes, evaluating alternative energy systems, pollution control and mitigation, natural resource management, and the effects of global climate change.
Their first research paper will be about the effects that letting Samaale tree climbing Aborigines live has on the environment.

East Africa University (EAU) is a private university in the autonomous Puntland state in northeastern Somalia. Founded in the commercial capital of Bosaso, it now has additional branches in Buhodle, Erigavo, Galdogob, Galkayo, Garowe and Qardho. The university offers courses in seven core departments, including classes for the Puntland Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation as well as legal professionals. It also operates a virtual distance learning center.

East African University Vice President Sheikh Abdirahman Sharmarke remarked, "Not all idooors are satisfied with sitting around chewing khat all day and, similarly, not all huutus are satisfied with detonating suicide vests. It is for this very, very tiny minority that this virtual distance learning program was devised."

Overview

A former Bender Qassim University institution, East Africa University was established in 1999 in Bosaso by a group of Somali educators. It began offering courses in October of the year to around 500 students.

A formal foundation laying ceremony for the college's original Bosaso campus, situated about 5 kilometres from the city center, was held in March 2000. It was attended by Puntland government officials, business and civil society groups, as well as many civilians. The first batch of pupils completed degree requirements in February 2005 and graduated several months later, in June.

EAU initially offered courses in two main areas: Arabic and Islamic studies, as well as business administration in a college set aside for the purpose. It later grew to include more intensive language courses. Additional professors were subsequently hired to accommodate the broadened syllabus.

A co-ed university, EAU offers various programs and diplomas to Somalia's undergraduate students.

Branches

East Africa University was initially based in the suburbs of Bosaso, situated in the far northeastern Bari province. However, it has since expanded operations and opened up new branches in Erigavo, Galdogob, Galkayo, Garowe and Qardho. On 18 April 2012, the university opened a seventh branch in Buhodle to serve pupils from the Ayn region.

On 18 March 2013, the Puntland government donated land in Garowe to facilitate the institution's growth in the administrative capital.

Programs and degrees

As of 2013, the university's Bosaso campus focuses on business and social sciences. Its Galkayo branch concentrates on computer science and engineering, in addition to health science.

Three, four or five year bachelor degrees are presented to all undergraduate students upon successful completion of course requirements. The Higher Institute of Health Science on the Galkayo campus likewise offers two-year general nursing and medical laboratory diplomas.

In order to develop the capacity of the Puntland government's statistics department, the university also provides short courses for the Puntland Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. These classes are structured along three phases, each held during the afternoon over a period of four months.

Additionally, the institution offers short courses earmarked for legal professionals.

Somalia needs doctors why don't you go back and teach them and be a professor more doctors will be in Somalia and going to India will be a pasr
Nobody goes to India for Higher MD studies... It's China. China is overcrowded with young Somali doctors.

Where do they go for their specialisation after their MD degree? China nor India isnt feasible as a residency since you lack the communication with patients

China. Some students stay there until they finish their masters. India and Malaysia are their favorite internship destinations though.

I am talking about post graduate education. After completing 6 years of medical school, you should enter specialisation track i.e gp or a surgeon which lasts 4-6 years depending on your specialisation. Where do recently graduated MDs do their residency?

Specialisation is a rare thing with these students... They complete their MD then internship and then maybe masters if they're lucky.. But that's it. You won't see a neurosurgeon or cardio thoracic Somali surgeon. It's a rare thing and it will stay that way.

The systems are so different. Here an MD is already a masters degree (3 years of bsc, 3 years of masters). So what kind of masters could they get if they already their MD degree?

Puntland needs doctors. I am not talking about “doctors” who received their medical degrees from Chinese medical schools. I am talking about western educated doctors. In order for Puntland to move forward, we need to invest our time to help and this is what I plan to do and I hope more people in the medical field do the same as well. Furthermore, I don’t know if any of you are aware, but all those “doctors” who got their degrees from China are not allowed to practice medicine in Puntland. They are only allowed to work as a nurse. One reason for this is that there is no way to verify their degrees, and the other reason is that they haven't completed internship/residency so they have zero practical skills. This is where western trained doctors come in to the equation. The students who graduate from Chinese medical schools can then go on to complete internship and specialization in Puntland from doctors from the diaspora.

Chinese and UK systems are similar most of the times. The first 5 years are bachelor of Medicine, 6th year Bachelor of Medicine Plus Bachelor of surgery (MBBS) with one year of hospital internship, 7th year (Masters of Medicine), and 8th year (Doctor of Medicine) programs. It's a hard work. You have to study real hard in 8 fucking years to even think of doing surgeries lmao.
