My Aunt, 1969 Mogadishu...

SubhanAllah when I discovered this picture, I was absolutely mesmerized. My habo literally looks like a Hollywood 1950's actress. So beautiful.
It also made me sad at the same time. I feel like we Somalis lost our elegance and class. We were like regal Queens and Kings in Africa pre-civil war . :'(

No walaal, lakiin, I'm just saddened by the loss of beauty and elegance of Somalis.

Yes, we have lost so much of our culture. It's tragic. Boat building, a lot of old arts and crafts, our proper historical attire, Sufism, our previous wildlife biodiversity which was very comparable to Kenya's... the civil war really raped Somali culture. We need to have a renaissance of sorts. A revival.

Exactly...a sort of renaissance needs to happen. The only way for this to happen is for the diaspora return home and bring their enlightened skills to Somalia!

It shouldn't be hard with modern marketing if one is truly motivated and has the funds. Somalis, like most people, are very prone to get carried away with trends. All you'd likely have to do is launch a lot of tv shows, books, cartoons, museums and such showing the old culture and glamorizing it and they'll eat it up. This is my dream, to be honest. Not just for Somalis but the whole Horn, Sudan, Chad and Northern Kenya. To heavily revive our 19th and early 20th century cultures and go around preserving things like folklores into books, cartoons and movies.

How much does droughts & famine affect the wild life ?
When I look at our dry land I can't imagine elephants, giraffe's & cheetahs roaming around

Not all of our land is dry, to be fair. There are several rather fertile enclaves like around the banks of the two rivers, cal madow, some areas of the northwest up in the mountains, some of the nugaal valley and so on. But yes, the droughts and such are a major region why so much wild life has migrated elsewhere. Somalia/Somaliland need a lot of work agriculture and greening wise. There are many local heroes doing their part but more must be done.

The lower and middle Jubba used to be swarming with lions, rhinos, giraffe and cheetah. They can still be found but nowhere near the same amount pre civil war. Jubbaland specifically the two gobols I just mentioned have the same terrain as Kenya so we could have had the same safari tourism they had. Sad really

Somalia wasn't as deserty as it is today. Elephants, giraffe, and many other animals, antelopes used to room all over somalia 120 years ago. The harsh land in northern somalia used to be mostly grassland. your grandparents can tell you a lot about how the environment used to look like many years ago. Just 60 years ago, my awoowo lost 4 female Camels in a single night to hungry lions near hargeisa. He told me that area was occupied by tons of lions.

Do you deny that hijab is part of our deen?
Can you go easy on the qashin my sister in islam. I have feelings you know. No I don’t deny hijab is part of our diin. I have no issues with what a woman chooses to wear, be it hijab, jilbab or niqab or nothing. I also don’t think wearing a hijab makes anyone more or less religious. Diinta should be personal and we shouldn’t force people one way or another

So why do you have issues with modern Somali women following Allah's command and wearing hijab/jilbab?

If you want to argue that their style of hijab isn't flattering, then fair enough, but comparing them to previous women who weren't taught the importance of hijab and arguing that is better makes it clear you have issues with hijab.

I’m allowed to have my preferrence, it doesn’t mean I have issues with it. I do think jilabab and niqaab are not requirements of the diin and Arab imports. They even have little girls wearing jilbabs back home. You have young girls wearing hijab and twerking on tiktok. They should be taught the purpose of the hijab which’s isn’t what happening now.

I've wondered at your opinion on this, sis. Do you feel Somali women who were dressed like this and often leaving their hair exposed were inexcusably sinning and Somali women should not return to their style:
