Amal Bank launches micro-financing in Puntland

Amal Bank, one of Somalia's pioneer Xawaalad companies, launched a micro-financing project in Bacaadwayn, Mudug, Puntland.

This is a great development. As usual, I see that Somali women are the ones who are mostly interested in small businesses. According to a study done on Puntland's economy, most of the small businesses are owned and operated by women.

I wonder why there is a such a disparity in gender when it comes to small businesses in Puntland?
On the other hand, I have heard that there are a LOT of male D&M small business owners in Puntland.

So, what's preventing young male Puntites from doing the same thing? Tahriib is very costly, so let's not use that excuse.

What's even more disturbing is that whilst Somali women make up the majority of small business owners, there are quite a few obstructions barring them from making great financial gains. There is an informal "old boys" network when it comes to Somali franchises and companies that sell shares.

Somali women need to start boycotting any major company that practises discriminatory hiring tactics. They have no problem with Somali women carrying out back-breaking work in the sun but don't want to see them in offices, even though many are well educated and experienced.


"The Somali private sector is dominated by micro, small and medium enterprises, and women are the main drivers – especially of small businesses. However, women usually enter the sector as a coping mechanism and remain trapped due to a number of barriers that limit their abilities to fully participate in social and political life,” the study revealed.

The study highlights the importance of education and experience – often gained through international exposure – as determinant factors in shifting the role of women in the private sector, from their participation in traditional subsistence-based economy to leadership in non-traditional, business-oriented (still typically male-headed and managed) enterprises. Nevertheless, women struggle to function in an environment where vital business information is still shared in a very informal manner and where strategic networks and strong clan connections (from which they tend to be excluded) persistently determine success.

The study further reveals that women are discriminated against in formal employment and this is most noticeable in both the financial and telecommunications sectors. While women make up roughly around a third of the clientele of banking institutions and 60% of large telecom companies, women hardly feature as employees. The percentage of women being employed in these two sectors was as low as 1 % in some companies, and reached a maximum of only 9%. Evidence suggests that women’s participation in wage labor in Puntland is currently at 40% – mainly concentrated in the agriculture sector."

Telesom is both hargeisa/xamar, they bought Zaad it was started by some tech savy isaaq youths in UK. My first time using had me surprised at how convenient it is, a few digits and you can move thousands of dollars.

Back to the topic, what makes you think Puntland men don't own as much businesses as the women there do? I think this goes for most Somalis, especially innovative businesses you always see women there in more numbers, maybe faraxs don't like new things and change.

It's scary because Somali women will outnumber Somali men soon, if we don't already outnumber them. The future of Somalia depends on Somali women and their prospects. Somali woman have proven to be very resilient and business savvy but we can't break these barriers without the help of our male counterparts. Kudos to Amal Bank, this is a step in the right direction!

I agree. There needs to be a change in the way Somali men back home think of women. Other societies have fully integrated women and have accepted that women are essential to their economic growth as a country. Somalis in Somalia need to accept that Somali women are important for Somalia's economy. Somali women are smarter than Somali men.

Bacadweyn is still not declared a district by PL while being more developed than Xarfo, Burtinle, Jariban, Eyl, Dangoroyo, Badhan,Carmo & Qandala, Saaxo, Towfiq districts. Bacadweyn was more developed than Galkayo during civilwar & can still boast of having the wealthiest, most educated & most influential population in Mudug.

Bacadweyn:
1. Have advanced power grid & supply that's free for schools, hospitals, streetlights & low income families. Bacadweyn was 1st town with electricity post civilwar
2. Piped water in every home & also free for public buildings, farms & for low income families. Bacadweyn was first town during the civilwar to get access to clean & piped water
3. Being located in a fertil valley is home to some of the biggest farms in PL like Roox farms, Qoriley & Fardo cuneyal farms that supplies most of mudug with fresh veggies, fruits, honey, sesame etc B/weyn blessed with rich grazing lands supplies Galkayo with meat, diary, animal skins, animal fat etc while also being big part of PLs livestock export.
4.B/weyn have 2 secondary schools,12 elementary/middle-schools & 2 major colleges with also many private schools, B/weyns Heema islamic schools
5.main hospital is 2nd biggest in Mudug after Galkayo hospital & the towns have many private health center & home to many of Mudugs doctors.
6. Have an "airport" landing strip which is pretty active & generates $$ for the town.
