Minnesota Muslims (Somalis) are divided over presidential race, with some abandoning Democrats over Gaza

Free access btw

I was reading this in the paper today cant believe this little section described the situation of minnesota somalis so well, Im sick and tired of impovershied somali europe immigrants keep hating on my takes.

This accounts for all the sides, all the democrat somalis in office of course their backing kamala out of party doctrine (maybe fear too).

But the people they think otherwise, every single take on here I can corroborate this is how mn somalis feel. Only thing im weirded out by is the muslim leaders endorsing a candidate, I really dont think they should be endorsing anyone at all.

Heres a particular take I read in the article that just had me agreeing 100%
The voter, Sharmake Mohamud of Rosemount, owns a trucking company and usually votes Democrat. Now, his top issue is the economy, which he said is “terrible.” It was better under Trump, he said.
Is he concerned about Gaza? Mohamud maintains that no candidate can win the office without the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel lobbying group, so Gaza won’t be a factor in his presidential vote.
Asked if he would also back Trump, the man next to Mohamud said, “Hell, no.” He’s concerned about the war and is voting third-party.

Even the cedar somalis are frustrated
Jovita Morales, leader of the Minnesota Immigrant Movement, said that when she knocked on doors in the last election in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, all but one Somali American planned to vote Democrat. She estimated, to her shock, that 35% or 40% of those who answered the door this fall said they would vote for Trump.
If 35% 40% are willingly voting for trump, imagine the amount that is voting third party or completely abstaining?
This abandon kamala movement is real and gaining traction and any somali in minnesota knows this is the case, unlike a handful of confused users here -- this is even coming from the star tribune...

I understand the sentiment laakin trump hates us more than he probably hates palis, its like our people like to follow trends as opposed to thinking of our own interests.

This Sharmarke fellow is putting his business and livelihood before politics and I can understand that, but he offers a half hearted reason as to why he’s decided to go with Trump over Kamala.

Yes I’m a fast reader apowe.
Well the article and interviews address that point, them abandoning the democrats is not them going over and supporting all the policies of trump, no. Its more of a protest, punishment in a way for whats been going on these past 4 years with israel and even domestically with the poor economy which hits somalis hard...

Have people forgotten what trumps policy on Palestine was?

Exactly this, not voting fine i understand even though in reality this is still basically a trump vote but don't actively show our support.

What makes it half hearted?

Does trump hate us? I dont remember republicans b*mbing somalia every day.

How are these trends, the article literaly goes over their reasoning and their reasons for not voting for kamala (which necessarily dosent mean their voting for donald trump). In fact, its for their OWN interests not silly trends. Them voting democrat would be more of them following a trend with immigrants traditionally always voting democrat.

I remember, he was pro israel no ones arguing that. The palestinian people still suffered, the people in the article discuss that. Without support from aipac they wouldve never got to that position anyways. But how does that compare to the past 4 years, where right off the bat israel started bullying the west bank with their ramadan raids. And now the massive war GENOCIDE in gaza.

What makes it half hearted is that he uses the “AIPAC controls everyone” line when its actually possible to mount serious opposition to them and it’s already happening, by exercising your right as an American citizen to vote 🗳️

If trump enters office do you think the current trajectory of the conflict in Gaza will change for the better?

Voting for the president is an absolute waste of time, Local elections matter way more and your vote actually matters.

What serious opposition is there to them? I dont understand how voting would help

You can't forget a lot of Somalis in MN are voting republican due to the LGBT curriculum debacle. They've lost on that issue and will continue to lose unless they decide to send their children to private schools. They're voting against their best interest.

Whether you like it or not MN is a safe blue state. AIPAC runs dems/reps on Israel and will continue to stay that way until most Americans realize it's not in their benefit.

Yes Trump does hate us, let us not forget how eager he was to literally ban us from entering the country in his first week of assuming the presidency as well as his hateful statements towards us. Secondly, there simply isn't a perogative to bomb Somalia and if there were I'd doubt he'd lose sleep over it.
