After I previous thread of Iceland v Somalia.
Now let's look at Maldives v Somalia.
Firstly Maldives is tiny.
But Maldives is today a wealthy country on it's way fast to being a rich one.
How did it get here?
Let's have a look at the stats.
GDP per capita will reach nearly 24,000 USD in 2028 v $705 for Somalia.
It's GDP in 2028 will be something like Cyprus or Greece today. That's developed economy levels.
So what did Maldives export? USD 238 million in 2021. 55% of that exports were fish. https://oec.world/en/profile/country/mdv
It's economy is just fish and tourism. A lot of tourism.
But it is developing a new island from reclaimed land from the sea. It is called Hulhumale.
So a tiny country of just 521,000 people is becoming rich by development not from foreign aid, ngos.
Yet Somalia is losing $600 million every year through fish plundering by foreign trawlers. Money lost down the drain.
