Central Statistics Department of the Ministry of Planning & National Development (MoPND), has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the Month of May 2019 (Base year 2012=100).CPI, May 2019.

1. Annual Inflation

The Annual Headline Inflation for the year ending of May 2019 decline 5.1 percent compared to the 6.6 percent recorded May 2018.

The Annual Food Crops Inflation decline 3.3 percent for the year ending May 2019 compared to 5.1 percent in May 2018. The drivers of changes were Melon decline to (37.4) percent for the year ending May 2019 compared to (28.5) percent registered similar month previous year. Onions inflation registered an decline (17.2) percent for the year ending May 2019 compared to the (12.2) percent recorded to the corresponded similar month previous year .Similarly, Canned fruits inflation decline 13.3 percent for the ending year ending May 2019 compared to 20.0 percent to corresponding month of the previous year. In addition, the Apples inflation decline 3.5 percent for the ending year ending May 2019 compared to 8.4 percent corresponded similar month of the previous year.

The Annual Energy Inflation, Fuels and Utilities (EFU) decline to 0.5 percent for the year ending May 2019 compared 9.4 percent recorded corresponding month of the previous year. The drivers were Charges – Use of Electricity inflation decline (16.2) percent for the year ending May 2019 compared to (12.4) percent recorded for the corresponding month of the preceding year. In addition, the Petrol Inflation decline (35.0) percent in May 2019 compared (5.1) percent recorded in corresponding similar month of the previous year.

2. Monthly Inflation

The Monthly Headline Inflation for May 2019 increase 0.8 percent compared 0.4 percent recorded in April 2019.
Monthly Food Inflation of May 2019 increase 1.3 percent compared 1.0 percent recorded in ending April 2019.

Food Crop & Related items monthly Inflation increase by 1.2 percent in May 2019 compared by 0.4 percent recorded in April 2019, (This was driven by the Potatoes increase 2.5 percent compared last month April were 2.3 percent, and Papaya – Pawpaw Increases 10.1 percent compared last month 3.8 percent. In addition, Core monthly inflation that increases 0.7 percent during May 2019 compared the 0.5 percent recorded in Apr 2019 (This was driven by the Fresh fish increase 4.4 percent compared last month April were (0.9) percent, also Boys Shoes Increases 3.7 percent compared last month 0.8 percent) and. Similarly, the Monthly Energy Fuel &utilities Inflation Increase by 1.4 percent for the month of May 2019 0.3 percent recorded during April 2019, (This was driven by the Charges – Use of Electricity increase 6.2 percent compared last month April were (4.7) percent, and Petrol Increases 2.7 percent compared last month (10.7) percent).
