It’s because the Muslim population is more religious. Prior to the 1980s, the Muslim community in France was barely religious.

As a result, the French government tolerated hijabs, niqabs etc. However, in the 1980s French students started protesting about hijab restrictions in school. The ban was lifted until the 2000s, post 9-11.

Since then, Laïcité has had its sights pointed straight at the French Muslim community.

I heard 65-70% of the non Muslim pop is born out of wedlock, I seriously don’t see France was as a sustainable state for the foreseeable future, maybe the Far Right takes over, or Muslims take over. The status quo is gonna collapse either way.
