Time is running out for the African Union to secure funding for the latest peacekeeping mission in Somalia, with new revelations showing all high-powered delegations dispatched from the continental body have returned empty-handed.
Former African Union Commission chairperson Moussa Faki, who had started the funding quest, told a conference in Kigali on Monday that Dr Kaberuka returned empty-handed because “one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council threatened to veto it.”
“The member did not even veto it, it just threatened to veto it and that was it,” he said.
According to Adeoye, Aussom requires $190 million per year, but currently has only $16.7 million, the bulk of which is what the AU Peace Fund has in its coffers. In addition, it counts on the $3 million and $1 million committed by Japan, and China respectively.
