Islamic Boycotting vs. Cancel Culture

Islamic Boycotting vs. Cancel Culture

By Bassam Zawadi

Cancel culture/call-out culture is nothing but a secular form of boycotting people for their views and stances.

Instead of being educated on the maqasid and conditions of making boycotting fellow Muslims, a growing number of Muslims have been influenced by secular liberal methods of admonishing people on religious and ethical grounds and have used such tactics against their fellow Muslims.

Muslim scholars have said that the purpose of boycotting other Muslims is to highlight the truth, contain falsehood from spreading, psychologically pressure people to stop openly preaching their falsehood, etc. Yet, the 'maqasid' of cancel-culture fanatics goes way beyond that. They seek to humiliate the people they disagree with. They are driven by spite and hatred. Their end goal is to punish people who disagree with them, not merely warn others about them. Conversely, Islamically-legislated boycotting is driven by a love for manifesting the correct understanding of Allah’s religion instead of a vindictive desire to put people ‘in their place.’

Many Muslims have ostracized and demonized other Muslims for sins that do not warrant such treatment. Moreover, ironically, many of these same Muslims have embraced and normalized relations with modernists who at best should be declared innovators if not kuffar, yet have chosen to banish some Muslims who have long served the Ummah for sins much less grievous in the sight of Allah. This is nothing short of double standards that we must all seek to avoid.
