I'd like to start an a non-profit indie fashion magazine in both English and Somali. I'm currently studying Somali (properly), but in the meantime, I'd appreciate it if someone could help me translate in Somali who is fluent in both English and Somali. I also don't mind if the individual who wants to help translate has a creative side and has opinions about certain topics.
A little background on myself I studied fashion and textiles up until university, then dropped out. I have great interest in Somali heritage, especially the fashion and textiles, as well as the past great pop culture we had. mainly (70's&80's are my favourite)
The target audience ranges from teenage boys and girls all the way up to women and men. I plan to start with women and girls this year because I relate to them more, and then work on more materials for men in the meantime, before publishing the men's and boys' magazine in the new year 2024, inshallah.
This magazine I want to create will target Somali culture, fashion, makeup, and hobbies, while also shining light on incredible Somali individuals.
The magazine's Somali language will target a Somali audience; much of what I want to write about there is no longer popular and will contradict many of their beliefs, but that is exactly what I intend to do. I will also challenge many norms and believes in the Somali diaspora.
But I'm not doing this to make people angry; I'm doing it because I believe that much of our culture has been lost or disappeared as a result of outside influences such as Arabs, Bollywood, Hollywood and now China???????. Which I don't see as necessarily bad to influence others, but when your culture is on the brink of extinction, it becomes a problem in my opinion, so I want to show that no matter where you are as a Somali, you can bring your culture into anything and everything. The best example for me is during the 70's and 80's. Yes, many things happened that I do not agree with and even condemn, but when you look at how we kept our culture and costumes, even when we had outsiders' influence, it was beautiful. Heck, even during the colonial period, we stayed strong.
I want our art and culture to be appreciated by many Somali people around the world, and honestly, it hit me more than ever last week after a couple incidents
It will be a creative and innovative way for Somalia's modern period, and I'm not sure if it will be popular, but I'll give it a shot and hope for the best.
How I intend to publish or share the magazine with the world:
I will begin with a blog, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok, and plan each project for the magazine myself. I want to incorporate both modern and old styles of fashion magazines which includes photography and art sketches,
As I stated, I don't know what will come of it, but I feel like if I don't start and give it a try, I will regret it in the future.
finally Finally, here are some fashion article paragraphs that you can translate in somali and post in the comments section if you are interested to help.
example 1:
Every New York Fashion Week, certain designer items emerge as the fashion crowd’s favorites. Last year, everyone was wearing the Prada logo tank tops and minimal strappy heels by The Row. This past week, however, dainty Manolos were eclipsed by one shoe destined to go viral: MSCHF’s big red boots, aptly named the Big Red Boot.
example 2:As of today, Milan Men’s Fashion Week has come to a close, but with seriously compelling runway moments from Italian houses such as Prada and Fendi, there were plenty of great looks to be inspired by in the months ahead—and that goes for the ladies as well as the gents.
example 3:Riding the Y2K wave we’re all perpetually on, Coach is reissuing their Demi bag in all new colorways. As a Gen Z fan-favorite, Coach has managed to become a staple piece of fashion’s current zeitgeist. We’re all craving nostalgia and holding anything reminiscent of the early 2000s near and dear to our fashion hearts.
Thank you for reading my long post.
