Somalia wasn’t colonised like other countries. Britain didn’t control the North until the 1920s, 16 years later the Italians pushed them out of the North. Similarly the Italians didn’t control the South until after 1927, 14 years later the British pushed them out of East Africa including Ethiopia during World War 2.

After 9 years of a military administration, the rise of the SYL movement, and rioting in the major cities, the North returned to protectorate status and the South became a trusteeship but with a clear 10 year deadline towards independence, 6 years later the South acquired home-rule and elections were held for the first time. In that same period the British quickly rushed to prepare the North for independence in a haphazardly way.

Neither of the two imperial countries ever had the necessary time to establish an institutional legacy because 1) Somalis refused to be subdued, 2) the amount of money spent on wars already put their budgets into a deficit, so they could not justify investing additional funds in building institutions, 3) there were too many major and global political events that kept shifting the sands in the Horn, so nobody in that period had a steady footing.

This is one of the reasons why outside of Pasta, a few buildings and the ceding of huge swathes of land, it would be very hard to see any trace of colonial influence on Somalia for good or bad compared to other countries whose entire language, culture and religions were altered.
