“LPT; you can get reasonably proficient in anything within 6 months “.

I can understand it, but cannot really converse in it. My current role at work means it’s impossible I could spend more than two Holiday weeks abroad in Somalia, I have spent some big bucks on Somali grammar books and they’ve arrived this week but not sure how far they can take me

Yes 6-12 months is enough if you can understand Somali but have poor speaking speaking skills.

You should be able to learn quickly if you practice speaking and also immerse yourself in Somali media and literacy

It is possible. You can only become proficient in a language by immersing yourself in it not by just merely talking or reading grammar books.

If you want to become better in Somali learn & memorize 1000 basic words first and then read books, articles and listen to programs, tapes etc You will learn from utilizing the basic words to understand the surrounding context to what you hear and read.

Good luck:nvjpqts:

Where would you learn though? What resources would you use?

Is it possible to become fluent without having a two way conversation ? ; for instance using all the grammar books and watching Somali media daily ? I imagine once you know a base, you can ‘practise’ with family

Yes because people learn languages through input not through output. You see the ''hooyo maatalo'' we love to make fun of, is someone who tries to learn Somali at home from speaking to his parents, very limited input from his surroundings.

Where would you learn though? What resources would you use?

Learn basic words and phrases here https://www.youtube.com/@afsomali101/videos

Then after you got that down, you can just hit up news sites to read like Hiraan, Horseed or BBC Somaliya, and read free books here https://archive.org/details/booksbylanguage_somali , listen to Somali TV like SOMTVMN and Somali dubbed shows here https://www.fanprojaflaam.com/
