1- Kenya under the Mau Mau rebellion fought a bloody war against the British. They were feared and labelled “terrorists”. They gained their freedom with sheer courage. One man stood up for the freedom of Somalis and he was backstabbed by Somalis and he died miserably of malaria in a hut. They fought for their freedom, but we were handed to us on a platter.

2- Millions of Somalis were hosted as refugees in Kenya. Businesses for all kinds of Somalis in Kenya are booming, but if you are from the wrong clan, you can’t openly do business in most urban centres in Somalia.

3- education, health care and employment, they are ahead of us a century.

4- Better infrastructure than all of Somalia/Somaliland. International standards hospitals and universities.

Nairobi is advanced due to british rule and support till the 80s. Somalia gained its governmental independence in the 50s and was never helped by any country. We grew economically by adopting socialism and we flourished with a high literacy rate in east africa and military. Kenya and South Africa only grew because of the whites who held them as slaves

Sxb, sorry to disappoint you, much of the buildings in the CBD and nearby suburbs in Mogadishu were relics from the Italian Colonial days, see, these are the only pictures Somalis rave about post-war Somalia. Secondly, Somalia has always been a basket case where our economy depended from foreign aid and loans from the IMF. We prefer fadhi-ku-dirrir than hardworking. It goes back to our Geeljire culture where the nomad just walks grazing animals and has nothing else to do other than create and recite clan poetry.

Siad Barre checkmated everyone including the Somalis and most importantly, the two superpowers. He led Somalia to join the Arab league, so he could scrap few dirhams from them. He told Ronald Reagan, Somalis would pray to Jesus if he could help him economically and militarily. He told the USSR that he is a committed communist and will transform Somalis to that lovely ideology. He told everyone what they want to hear to stay in power. Off course, he was a shrewd Machiavellian leader who spent some of the aid money on good projects and industries. He didn’t want to make the same mistakes as the corrupt regimes he replaced.
