If you ever visit Malaysia

....and if you are a university student or a graduate, visit the Somali refugee community in Kuala Lumpur and offer your services as an English, Maths or I.T, teacher or as a tutor, even for a week to give some respite, or some time off for the long term volunteer teachers. There are approximately 2000 (this figure is only those registered with the UNHCR) refugees and the majority are women and their children. Work visas are very strict to come by and most of the (few lucky ones) employed work as cleaners, children aren’t allowed to attend schools. The centre compromises of 4 small rooms and children take turns to be taught from morning to evening some basic English, maths and I.T. subjects. Most of the volunteers are Malaysian, Singaporeans, White people and some Somalis. Life there is struggle street, they don’t want to go back to Somalia as they think that they’ve a slim hope that New Zealand will accept them as refugees, or get married to diaspora Somalis and a ticket out of Malaysia. They are luckier than the Rohingya refugees who are deported by larger numbers back to Thailand or Myanmar because fewer Somalis are deported and most of them only when they are caught in an immigration sting operations working illegally, or coming to the attention of the cops for fighting and other misdemeanours. If you visit Kuala Lunpur, do your civic duty and contribute to the future of these children.

You could also sponsor a child for U.S20.00 a month for h/her education. Visit their Facebook page, Somali Refugee Community in Malaysia.

Thanks for sharing this information. I will check their Facebook page

Thank you I will sponsor them once I get a tech job. I might travel there in my vacation and give them laptops and books also introduce programming to the adults so they can earn money online as a developer.

I did spend my holidays there but I had no idea there are refugee camps in Malaysia.

I wonder where else there are refugee camps aside from Kenya, Ethiopia and Yemen.

Since Malaysia is not a signatory of the refugee convention, they don't issue permanent residencies or financial, health, housing and educational assistance to asylum seekers, if you are not registered with the UNHCR (which takes time to obtain), then you are an illegal alien and when caught, you will be incarcerated in these camps for deportation and you’ve no freedom of movement. Luckily, most Somalis are unhcr registered and live among the population. But, they've to fend off for themselves.

same goes for Indonesia especially Jakarta. Somali mothers struggling there, very sad.

The Somalis in Indonesia are worse off because most of the Somalis in Malaysia get some help from charities and wealthy Malaysians. Also, many of them rely on remittances from relatives in the diaspora.

There are Somalis in Nauru and Papua New Guinea sent there by the Australian government.

Papua New Guinea? we really are everywhere.

Yeah, I posted that article a couple of months ago here. Poverty is widespread in Indonesia when compared to Malaysia and most of these Somalis there spent thousands of dollars to get there and planned to get on boats to Australia. But the Australian government became too tough on asylum seekers, especially those who come via boats from Indonesia and enacted a policy of sending them to Nauru and Papua New Guinea. They can apply asylum and settle there. The boats from Indonesia stopped and that’s why they are stuck in Indonesia.

Couple of things I’ve gathered from having a friend in Malaysia and also running into a single mother who was led into the US from Malaysia:

Here are the Facts:

There are young folks who’s their parents send them to Malaysia from Somalia. These people are mainly Somali government official’s kids. Many of them have turned into an absolute drunkards. They party and get arrested because they can’t handle their bottle.

There’s this sick practice happening as well. Australian faaraxs come down to Malaysia for vacation and sleep with these refugee Xaliimos. Some of them marry them but dip on them once they step back into Australia. The single mother I ran into was tricked by a 55 year old Faarax Australian. She admitted that she was starving and had to succumb to his advances. He had her in a hotel for a month. She claims that they married religiously. However once he returned to Australia he cancelled his phone number.

@R.Kelly

There are always despicable people who take advantage of desperate people. It isn't isolated to the Somali Australian men. Even met many diaspora Somali girls from Europe, North America and Australia who marry those guys from Malaysia, but it is always to their male cousins/relatives. Most are genuine marriages who prefer these guys rather than you and me.

Nope and what info do you want? First day you land there, head to the community centre and you will get all the information you need. Or, meet these guys who came on scholarships and are studying there who are related to the Somali politicians. You might've more in common with them rather than with me.
