If Mogadishu is going to stay as the Capital, It needs Massive Reconstruction and Zoning Laws

Hypothetical speaking, if and when Al-Shabab is "defeated" one of the first few things the government needs to do is focus on cleaning the capital

Aesthetic of a city, especially a capital can go a long way. It can have a positive impact economically, culturally and mentally on citizens of a country and can attract foreigner investors/companies. With that said I believe Xamar needs a total "revamp". We always see all these fancy mansions/villas and residential buildings but they are placed in between commercial areas and even areas with destroyed roads etc.

Zoning laws need to enforced, no more hotel beaches, no more compact roads, restrictions on the number of tuk tuks. More greenery. I am surprised on well the old government was able to build and expand off what the Italians built. It was a beautiful blend. You can get Somali and Foreign architects to work together to redesign the entire city and Somalis from all over can be hired to work on the construction and building so the money goes back into the economy. If the pay is good many of these "militia" men roaming the streets and ciyaal suuq will do these jobs instead of wasting their lives.

Look how beautiful this looks for an aerial view. Perfect design. greenery everywhere, marble white buildings. Streets are well maintained. Simply beautiful. The crown jewel of Somalis in which all Somalis invested in and built and maintained together before the civil war.

Mogadishu needs knowledgeable urban planners. Have you ever been to Eastleigh in Nairobi?
There's multiple towers on each street but they were not planned properly or the owners didn't care. This resulted in some places being very windy and some other low houses being blocked from sunlight.

My father and mother always tell me stories about Xamar was one of the most beautiful places to live. People would go out of their way to pick up random trash if they saw it, everyone care for their city and some people went as far as become volunteer bricklayers when new roads or buildings were being built. It's very sad that we never got to enjoy this.

Mogadishu was under 300k back then. Italians also helped build and organize a lot of the construction, that’s why it was beautiful (no one beats Italian architecture).

Today it’s city of 2 million plus dealing with war, terrorism , drought refugee shanty towns. Still Xamar looks better than 99% of somali cities who have half the issues and challenges

The Italian only built the middle and the east side Mogadishu near the port as a strategic and financial areas, the Somali gov post 1969 added to what the Italians built and had Somali engineers and architects who were trained in Rome expand the city, there was also an Italian guy who become Muslim and learned af-Somali who was working for the Somali government was helping with the extensions and planning of Xamar's new districts

they are the owners of the city for now, it's been that way since 1991

why do you ask?

They own the city of Xamar or Mogadishu but they don't own the capital. If you understand what I mean.
The capital should be somewhere all Somalis can see as home and as the place where someone from SL and JL can be neighbors.

Many African countries captials looked good right after colonization. People suffered under Europeans but we had opportunity after winning freedom but squandered it . Asmara is like time capsule , Nairobi increased in size but got way dirtier and more disorganized, and xamar is in worst shape due to civil war

As alshabaab are defeated alot of people will return to their areas, Shanty Towns will be removed, the Largest Shanty Town near the Airport was removed in 2014 and the people moved to other areas.

Mogadishu will need to build outwards, the city will be over 5 million in the near future and the Government should be prepared for that.
