Ibn Taymiyyah on the Intelligence of the Salaf

وكل أحد يعلم أن عقول الصحابة والتابعين وتابعيهم أكمل عقول الناس، واعتبر ذلك بأتباعهم، فإن كنت تشك في ذكاء مثل مالك، و الأوزاعي، والليث بن سعد، و أبي حنيفة، وأبي يوسف، ومحمد بن الحسن، وزفر بن الهذيل، والشافعي، و أحمد بن حنبل، و إسحاق بن إبراهيم، وأبي عبيد، وإبراهيم الحربي، وعبد الملك بن حبيب الأندلسي، و البخاري، و مسلم، وأبي داود، وعثمان بن سعد الدارمي، بل: ومثل أبي العباس بن سريج، وأبي جعفر الطحاوي، وأبي القاسم الخرقي، وإسماعيل بن إسحاق القاضي، وغيرهم من امثالهم، فإن شككت في ذلك: فأنت مفرط في الجهل أو مكابر؛ فانظر خضوع هؤلاء للصحابة، وتعظيمهم لعقلهم وعلمهم، حتى انه لا يجترئ الواحد منهم أن يخالف الواحد من الصحابة، إلا أن يكون قد خالفه صاحب آخر،
“Everyone knows that the minds of the Sahabah, their successors, and those who came after them were of the most perfect of minds. If you were to doubt the intelligence of the likes of Malik, al-Awzaa’i, Layth bin Sa’d, Abu Hanifah, Abu Yusuf, Muhammad bin Hassan, Zufar bin al-Hudhayl, ash-Shafi, Ahmad bin Hanbal, Ishaq bin Ibrahim, Abu ‘Ubayd, Ibrahim al-Harbi, Abdul Malik bin Habib al-Andalusi, al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abi Dawud, Uthman bin Sa’d ad-Daarimi; even the likes of Abi Abbas bin Surayj, Abi Ja’far at-Tahawi, Abu al-Qasim al-Khiraqi, Ismail bin Ishaq al-Qadi, and others from similar calibers. If you doubted their intelligence, then you are either an ignoramus or arrogant. See the submission of these scholars to the Sahabah and their magnification of their intellect and knowledge. This was done to the extent that not a single one of them dared to oppose a single ruling of any of the Sahabah, unless he was aware of another Sahabi adhering to the opposing view.”
