Those fellas (Varangian Rus) gave Russia it's name and it's first ruling family.
Some people will look back with awe at the the manly glories of groups such as the Vikings but we rarely hear the historical narrative of those on the losing side. Their loss, trials and tribulations are a mere footnote in most of recorded History. Take the slave women and men in this primary historical source. Were they Slavs, Finns, Balts? Were their villages razed to the ground in a Viking raid?......
From a modern, Western idealistic perspective, the human spirit of such folk must have been made of something else for them to suffer such cruelties yet choose life over death.
