I want to be a writer

My writing is severely underdeveloped because I hardly read as much as I should. I know if I only read a lot more books (incl. fiction even though I really enjoy non-fiction) my writing would be on another level.

Writing comes really easy to me, I could literally sit and write for hours on end and my computer freezes because of all the writing I have saved on it. Writing is kind of theraputic for me. Also, when I was a teen I had a medical condition in my thyroid which affected my voice. I was really ashamed of speaking so written words were my primary means of communication and I wanted to develop it. Sort of like how blind people have above average hearing.

As a kid, writing was the only thing that my parents and loved ones said I was good at. And I believed them, still do. I use to write for fun many paragraphs and it would overwhelm both my parents and friends. But now that I am getting older I feel like writing is my true calling. I don't see too many Somali guys being writers.

I want to write a really good novel that can be a best seller. I also want to do some screenwriting for a Netflix series.

I know I don't want to go down the conventional route either. I want to work in theatres. I genuinely like a good human story. And when it comes to producing a body of writing its like I really enjoy the complexities of human life. We see this first hand as third culture kids who live between the east and the west. Life is complicated and the older I get the more accepting of that I am. I feel like I've got a story (or multiple stories) to tell. These things we go through as young men are beautiful. They shouldn't be held within, they should be confidently articulated

You should pursue it, but let me ask: is there a field of interest? Even with bland novels, one must bring in original content not to mention exhibit brilliance in literature.

Postscript:
Think about joining Somali PEN, an organisation, which brings together established, and aspiring authors from the Somali peninsula. http://www.somalipen.org/

Best of luck.
