I called my only stepdad "Abti" because I couldn't bear to call him Aabo

Do you think its disrespectful to call your stepdad "Abti" instead of "Aabo"?

Personally, I just felt sick if I did call him that. He was an abusive piece of shit, even tried to poison us with making me and my brother ingest soap that looked like sweets, like the guy was...to say the least...fucked up. Either way, even if he wasn't like this and he was nice, I could never call him Aabo. Just a no-go. But I have a stepmum now and I don't mind calling her Hooyo, like that's normal, I treat just like I would my real mum. I don't know, I just feel like I can't call a male step-parent my dad. Ever.

I always found it strange how Somali culture normalised calling someone other than their own mother or father hooyo & aabo out of respect.

Even if it were a stepdad or stepmother, and I had a great relationship with them, I would never address them as if they were my parents (unless they raised me, then they qualify as being treated as a parent).

Just my opinion.

I never called my sibling’s parent aabo. That is only a title I reserve for my father. Out of respect, I called him adeer.

Hold on are you adopted?

Also do even call him abti or aboo around when he is there to begin with without your feelings.

I would say your right to call what it is since yes he is not your biological father hence him being your abti ( i would use adeer instead ) but if you have no clue who your biological father or died and he * raised * you he could be your aboo ( again im just assuming all of this ). It 50/50 IF he was nice person.

But then him being asshole stepdad you can just straight up call him abti or if you want not call him anything like what kind insane person poision the children that not biological yours or poision children ig?
:what1:

Tl;dr: Use Abti but do not use that when getting older.

Adeer is much better than Abtii, even though Abtii is an endearing honorable title.

No so basically I know my real dad I'm not adopted, its just that my real mother not my stepmum was married to this other guy because she was divorced from my real dad, and that's who I am talking about. My stepmum is the first person my dad got married to, them my mum, then this new lady recently who is also a piece of xaar
