I heard its the odd one out along with maghrebi arabic, which is the hardest for other arabs to speak and listen to. Anyways, heres a few start up words to get you going...
Levantine (syrian and lebanese):

Egyptian and sudanese:

Khaliji:

And maghrebi is a whole different subject imo; i doubt youd be going there.

I used to work with this older palestinian man, he was a sweet old man but ngl it used to annoy me so much that he would speak to me in arabic everyday even though I told him I don't understand him. But he would say, why you no understand, arabic is your language too, you have to learn!

On the plus side I did learn some from him lol

I went to this Egyptian mosque during the summer once, and this Arab guy saw me in the masjid parking and started speaking Arabic to me, I told him I didn’t know Arabic and he legit thought he saw a ghost, he kept asking why I didn’t learn my language? :gucciwhat:

I told him Arabic is not my language I’m Somali and I know afsomali, he said Somalis are our brothers and sisters we are all the same, I told him to learn Somali first and then this is where I knew I f*cked up, he said okay give me your name and teach me Somali and I will teach you Arabic :nahgirl::drakelaugh:

Why do some arabs assume we speak their language lol? Just because we might look like their Sudanese friends, doesn't mean we're Afro-Arabs too.

When someone asks me. I give them a thorough history lesson about Somalia with talking points about lingustics, migration, history, geneology and rudimentary genetics. Normally, they are so lulled to death that they feel defeated and take my position. Works every time.

Sudan is a heterogeneous and diverse nation lookswise and genetically. Most don't look Somali. Many are a recent admixture between S. Arabian and Nilosaharan. Those that fall outside of this are the Beja (North Cushitic speaking group). In a way, various Sudanese groups are Afro-Arabs in their genetic profile while Cushitic-speakers are not and are classified as their own group.

Somalis are known to speak many languages, I would not be surprised if misunderstanding like this happens all the time. This elderly lady from Kenya spoke to me in Swahili and was shocked that I didn’t speak it, minutes later 2 somali women walked in and they all communicated in Swahili. It’s was pretty cool :)
