Al-Shabbaab never fought their way into most regions they conquered back in late 00s. Most people in South really believed the Jihaad narrative of Christian Xabash Ethiopia vs Muslims. Many clans including mine welcomed and provided shelter to what they saw as mujaahidiin. Often times Shabaab would send high ranking officials to their clans to establish good relations they sent to Abgaals our own son Kabokudukade, to RX they sent Roobow etc. Also at that point Al-Shabaab was riding on the good reputation ICU gave islamic rule.

But over time people grew to despise the draconian rule of Al-Qushaash and the uprisings have been plenty over the past decade but this government has understood the nature of Al-Shabaab and how to effectively eradicate them by supporting the locals.

So HSM was not wrong saying Shabaab didn't arrive by the gun as conquerors but they were welcomed by locals and can be kicked out by locals.

It doesn’t make sense for Al shabab to be hawiye anymore maybe in 06 but not now when 200m tax is coming out of hawiye pockets to fund the fgs more then any other qabil has paid it’s a detriment to hawiye that they have to pay taxes to Al shabab as well. The people that support Al shabab are well known they are black listed by the United States treasury and all come from bosaso and sanaag.
