How I became more East African

I notice a bunch of people like to discuss DNA of East Africans so i thought i would share my experience.

I live in the USA where 23&me was doing free DNA test for Africans of certain countries and Ethiopia was one. I went ahead and sent my sample and i received my result.

I was
68% East African
30% North African
0.3% European
the rest was unknown

I was a little surprised :damn:because of the old adage, we can name our ancestor up to 7 to 8 generation back and none of them were non-Ethiopian. etc. I told my parents the result and they were very surprise and wanted to do a test of their own and there result were pretty similar to mine.

My father has more north African admixture and my mom's was almost identical to mine.

The website allows me to connect with my relatives so i went ahead a connected with both my parents be cause it would allow me to see where i got my certain admixture (P.S this is pretty boring if your parents are the same background)

Here is the reason i started the thread. After i connected with my parents a few days later i received a message that told me there has been an update on my ancestry. When i opened it my percentage has changed all of a sudden to

84% East African
12% North African
0.7% European

:leon:My parents result like wise changed and they became more East African aswell. I say all of this to say I think the DNA the second time around was more accurate then the one before. It was clear they did not have enough sample for East Africans and were giving us higher North African then they should be.

I feel like people who are doing the DNA test thing should really take it with a grain of salt and don't form a whole identity around this crap.:fantasia2:

The End

Sorry that was so long:meleshame:

I read the whole thing just off of the fact that your Habesha because Habesha = PAHG. However, I'm confused by the title, how did you become more "East African", when your already Ethiopian, beloved?

I meant the percentage of east African increase but you're right i am East African regardless.:icon lol: The whole point is we should not relay on these tests to identify ourselves.

Most East Africans on Youtube get so happy when they see Middle East % :icon lol:

If I recall correctly, the results of DNA tests as it pertains to percentages don't necessarily mean that you're blank percent this or blank percent that. It means that that portion of your DNA is shared with someone who is of a given nationality.

For example, if someone gets a test back that says that they are, say, 25% Finnish, that means that 25% of their DNA is identical to someone who is 100% Finnish. As a result, concrete details are hard to come by for certain DNA types, like Native American given how expansive that is.

23andMe's groupings are unscientific and have no basis in reality. They are simply an artificial constructed model of races rather than real subgroups in the world.

The data is legit, but not the ancestry calculations.

How often do they update and do they update when they get more samples or?:cosbyhmm:
Mine hasn't updated yet.

They update sporadically mostly to tell you things about genetic markers related to your health. They Updated my ancestry percentage two weeks after i connected with my parents and did not after that.

They should remove the Habesha and Maasai from the East African category. Sorry, but these groups have too much West African and Semitic ancestry to be in the group.

This is why the numbers are so messed up.

I haven't connected to my parents and they haven't took it lol so I'll just wait.
Are you fully Amhara?

They only use markers specific to these East African groups so why would it matter:win:?
Had Habesha been a reference sample in its entirety, we would be getting 100% EA.:icon lol:

In very simple terms this is what they do:

Make up a bunch of categories based the feelz and commercial interest (especially in Europe there's a couple of BS ones like Ashkenazi).

They get samples from those groups (whole genomes) and tell the algorithm: people like this belong in that category [forcing the algorithm].

And then you get the garbage you see on 23andMe.

The Maasai especially totally screw up the East African category.

The Luhya mess up the West African category.

But someone told me on this forum and what I read from that there are specific markers belonging to each groups and they use that?

What do Maasai's get on 23andme?... although I doubt there has ever been one lol
